Essays : Good to Great

Recommendations : Excellent

My only worries are my senior year mid-terms grades, and that the Adcoms don't know about the stiff competition in my class ( Best students from all over the country)

Also, in India, EC activities are hard to come by, especially in the school I'm in presently.
Academic success is the only focus.

Schools I am applying to :

University of Pennsylvania ED

Cornell University

U of Wisconsin - Madison

UIUC

Texas A & M

Purdue U

U of Minnesota - TC

Ohio State University

Virginia Tech

North Carolina State University

I have two questions :

What are my chances at these universities?

Could you'll please suggest some good engineering schools that give international students substantial aid/scholarships?

Ah yes, I'm going to be applying for financial aid everywhere, though I'm aware that'll greatly lower my chances of getting accepted.

Seriously this is not such a great list if you are applying for aid.How much do you need?

I can pay only around 20-30 k for the first year.

And after that?Do not go into visa rules about having finance for first year.Plan for all 4 years.Do you have around 40-50 K ? Even that may be less for these colleges.

Do you have any safeties in mind?

I’m not 100% sure , I’ll get back to you on that.

Safeties depend entirely on how far below you can go on rankings.I can provide you with a few only if you go below on the prestige thing. These are the colleges in which you have a good chance of having significant merit aid. Also you can apply to ivies and a handful of LACs with need based aid.But they are not safeties at all.

I can pay around 100k for 4 years.
I am willing to go below on the prestige thing.

I’m really keen on UMinn, great school and affordable. I want to pursue Chemical Engineering, should have mentioned that above.

Thank you for the advice!

Its allright.UMinn is great. You can apply to UAH.I think you can get a full ride there. Its is great for engineering.

The application deadline for UAH was August 22.

Really?I didn’t know that.Did you apply?

Engineering at Waterloo is probably in the right price range, and it ranks higher (in QS Engineering & Technology) than some of these choices.

No I didn’t radner.

Thanks Sapper! I’ll check it out right away.

University of Alabama Hunstville international applications need to be in by Dec 1 for scholarship consideration.

I don’t know the cut-off for the main University of Alabama, but I expect it is the same.

If you are female, consider Smith College and Sweet Briar. Both of those women’s colleges offer engineering programs and have good need-base aid. Sweet Briar may have merit aid for your stats.

I AM considering Smith, now I’ll look at Sweet Briar too.

Thanks a lot guys.

happymomof1 that deadline is for the scholarship application only. The main deadline was August 22.

Sapper I am probably going to apply to McGill and Waterloo in December. Thank you!

heyjude22 -

Check again. Here is the link for scholarship information at UAH. [UAHuntsville - Admissions - Financial Aid - Scholarships](http://www.uah.edu/admissions/financial-aid/finaid-scholarships) International applications for fall 2013 are still open. The August date was probably the cut-off for January admissions.

If you can’t afford, you have to apply for need-based aid, which is not offered by public unis to international students. You have a few public unis in your list. Think about it.

Also, no awards or EC’s before your 9th grade will be considered. So, I guess you must remove all those which are dated before 2010.
