D just called in tears saying she overslept. Made it to the last 45 minutes of the exam, but the professor was not accommodating. Is there anything she can do?
No, if the teacher is not accommodating, it’s too bad. She’ll have to accept it as a good lesson and move on.
Just talked to her. It looks like she will be able to take it at some resource center. She’s heading over there now to see when she can take it. Whew! Hopefully, she learns a lesson from this.
Wow, nice professor! She should remember that employers might not be that understanding.
Oh, we have had this conversation many times. She comes from a high school that allows kids “do-overs” on tests if they get below a B. Drives me crazy! What does that teach them? While this is sort of the same thing, I am glad she is getting the chance to take the exam since we are paying for it. Hopefully, the sheer panic she had when she woke up and raced over to her exam and then having to call and tell us about it will be enough of a lesson.
More than 30 years after getting out of grad school, I still have nightmares where I don’t know where my final exam is or haven’t been to class all semester! I keep thinking I will outgrow these dreams some day!
I have those dreams too! Usually I’m repeating High School (for some reason) and I realize I had forgotten to do any homework for a class with a major paper and/or exam just around the corner. I graduated over 35 years ago!
@MaineLonghorn I have the exact same dream. Graduated in the 80’s. So stressful!
I would suggest that she write the professor a thank you email once she gets back to her dorm after finishing the exam.
Hopefully lesson has been learned with minimum consequences.
Happy holidays!
@happy1 I plan to have her do that. Thanks.
That’s really so nice of the professor. My D earlier this semester accidentally submitted a wrong lab test (like a code work in CS). She grabbed the wrong file or something like that, she realized immediately, almost within a minute, and emailed the TA and professor but they didn’t let her resubmit. Lost enough on the final grade that could have made a full letter grade difference.
My nephew did a few days ago but the prof let him make it up the following day. He is a good student in that class in general (when not sleeping through the final) so maybe that played into it?
I am a professor and have usually allowed a retake but reduce the grade on the exam by a set %. One time, in a grad course, where I knew all of the students very well, I had one oversleep for an 8am exam. After 15 min, I had another student call her and wake her up. She missed about 35 minutes but still had 1hr 25 left and mostly completed the exam.
