I was accepted into the lehigh drexel program and i am trying to decide between the program and cornell, i was wondering if anyone knew if you could apply out from the program? and any other general advice...

My son is accepted at Cornell also and he is confused too.

i was accepted to lehigh/drexel too (and no other 6/7/8 programs...so i'm deciding now)

from what i remember, you're welcome to apply out of the program, but you sacrifice your acceptance to drexel

i was reading things over at the student doctor forums about drexel med and from what i see, drexel med is mostly given a bad name because of the whole bankruptcy fiasco it had in 1998:

"...in 1993, the two [referring to Hahnemann University and Medical College of Pennsylvania] merged to form the MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine of Allegheny University of the Health Sciences, the largest private medical school in the country. Five years after this historic merger, the parent corporation of the medical school, Allegheny Health Education and Research Foundation (AHERF), declared bankruptcy." --taken from Drexel University College of Medicine website

but apparently things are okay now....

i heard that drexel wasnt't the best medical school and i'm not that comfortable with lehigh...very small minority population...but i'm scared that if i skip the chance i'll end up in fierce competition in cornell and not get into medical school.. does anyone know for sure if you can apply out after your third year if u decide the sacrifice your position at drexel?? I dont know who else to ask????????

have you visited lehigh? i'm planning on visiting in a couple of weeks to see how it is...

yeh i am going on the 16 they have a thing for the ba/md kids they sent me a letter in the mail...i hope i like it...

people have pretty much just been telling me to visit each campus and decide based on which one i feel best at, regardless of what other factors there are...but its reallllllllllly hard to do that...

i guess if you're going on the 16th, you could ask them that day about applying out......

yeh ive been to cornell and i love the campus but i cant get past the fact that i have a lesser chance of getting into medical school and lehighs giving me a gurantee... but i'm from NY im scared of PA ahahah 7 yrs is a long timee

well at least you're kinda used to the cold weather...i'd have to move from california to PA! ahhh! one of the students i talked to at drexel went to lehigh undergrad (and passed with like a 3.4562 gpa or something, barely made the 3.45 requirement) and him and the villanova/drexel girl i was talking to both told me that i shouldnt go to a school just based on a med program....

...but then everyone else tells me how competitve premed is and i'm just sitting here wondering how i'm supposed to choose

i need to talk to people who go to these programs! how do u know people lol!! i like lehigh cause its 3 yrs and anywhere else i would have to do four and i want to go to medical school really BADLY.. my dad telling me that at cornell it would be A LOT harder to get a good gpa.. i am soo confused..i dont waznt to fail at cornell then regret passing up the program

i was lucky enough to eat lunch at drexel with a girl from the villanova/drexel program and when i told her i applied to lehigh she was like "oh, my friend went there" and she called him over...so yeah, luck :)

yeah i can totally relate to your position, but choosing between an ivy league/guaranteed med is something a lot of people would be happy to choose from, so things arent SO bad...

hahah yeh watever i'll see wat happens i just hope theres some brown kids at lehigh..hahah..good way to base college decisions

hahahah sounds like a sound strategy to me

Hi,
I'm trying to choose between Lehigh and RPI-- It sucks cuz I had lunch with someone from the Villanova program and really wanted to find out more about lifestyle etc at Lehigh. I also have an issue with the diversity thing...most important what is their rate of people staying at Lehigh and then continuing onto Drexel. I know the current Drexel Med school has only been in existence for a short time... or how long has it been? Does anyone know? Has a class graduated fully through the new three med schools combined Drexel? Sorry if my post didn't make any sense but any comments would be great!

I really wish i could find out more about the program but NO ONE seems to know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi guys, I got into the lehigh/drexel program too; I'm going on the 16th. i talked to a couple people who went through the program, and they said undergrad at lehigh and maintaining a 3.4 avg is no big deal at all. i'm waiting to see how i like the school on the 16th, i mean, it's like bethlehem , pa- i'd have to think about it:) anyways, does anyone know about the asian population at lehigh?

HAHA thats wat i want to know i'm coming on the 16th too 'm not sure about lehigh at all i'm kind of tempted by other schools ill have to see but the saftey thing skeeps making me come back

I've heard that premed at Cornell is incredibly rigorous. But judging from the following statistics, it looks pretty doable.

Normally, I would say go for the guaranteed program but I am a little bit wary of the lehigh/drexel area.

Med school acceptance rates: 80% overall for Cornell in 2003. 77% in 2004. 86% among applicants with 3.4 or above GPA's. 99% for applicants with 3.8 or above GPA's.

Cornell sounds good (it is an ivy), but I've also heard premed is really intense. The good thing about the program is you dont have to go through the application process again, and plus there is more pressure on your MCAT scores, GPA, etc.

my opinion,
you would have to be either
1) crazy [and i mean realllllly CRAZY] or
2) very very smart and very confident
to pass up lehigh/drexel and go to cornell

cornell is 4 years of high tuition and lots of hard work
lehigh is guraunteed med skool and only 3 years undergrad

i would personally go to lehigh
