Help.. AP Stat vs. AP Calc AB

I am currently a junior, and I plan on majoring in Finance. My issue is that I don't know if I should take AP Stat or AP Calc AB. Which would be more beneficial in the long run? I have been reading some other posts and they either say it's more practical to take AP Stat because it is more related, and other refute it saying that only social studies majors really need it, as well as the fact that it isn't has highly regarded as AP Calc. If it helps I plan on applying to UPENN, Dartmouth, University of Virginia, etc. Also my school does not offer AP Calc BC.

It really depends on the school. Go to the catalog for some of the schools you are interested in and see which one they accept and applies to your major.

for those schools you have listed

i would take ap calc ab

Ultimately knowledge of Calculus (at least at the AB level, but in practice at the BC level and more) is essential to the study of statistics.

I recommend that you take Calculus AB and leave Statistics to college.

Honestly it’s not something to worry about. In the end, they’re both AP level math classes that look equally good. I would just take whatever class you think you’ll do better in. I took both and I did considerably better in Calc. In stats, there’s a lot of writing/english and reasoning involved. Calc is more so what you’ve been accustomed to in terms of math (Algebra/geometry type stuff) except harder.

AP Calculus looks better on an application. Calculus is a considered a full-year course, whereas AP Stats is only considered a semester-long course.

Why not both? If your a junior then you can take one next year but I’d go with Calc

In my experiance, it depends on how much you love math. My friend in my BC class last year (loves math), hates the AP Stat class because of how slowly it moves and how dense the kids in it are. Another (not so fond of math), loves it because it is understandable. If you are a numbers person, and math is your thing, I’d say AB if not BC. If you live economics and following money flow, but struggle with functions, operations, and computation, stick to stat.

Take calc. You’ll regret not taking it if you’re applying to those types of schools

If you need to take calculus in college for your major (which you will for finance, economics, or business), or as a general requirement at the college you want to attend, take calculus. Majors which require both calculus and statistics often require a statistics course with a calculus prerequisite anyway.

Students who have no need for calculus for their majors or general requirements for their colleges may find statistics to be of more practical value.

AP calculus AB and AP statistics are typically seen as equivalent to semester-long college courses, if they are accepted at a given college.

Most private olleges dont give you credit for AP Statistics.
