We have spent the weekend talking about this whole situation. Cornell has always been his dream school. We have decided to accept the ED and hope he gets some $. If not, we will still make it happen for him.
Thank you all for your awesome input!
FYI he is so excited he already changed his FB page to Cornell class of 2016 haha

^My parents seem to have the same line of thinking that you do. I think they are beginning to accept me going to Cornell and somehow making it happen :D

I’m glad to hear that Cortana431. It is a tremendous opportunity.

Welcome to class of 2016. Now you can start making hotel reservations for the move in day (Aug 17-20) and Parents weekend (Oct 19, I think). Think about 3000 families needing hotel rooms in a small town like Ithaca. It is one of the perks of getting in ED.

And feel free to ask us experienced Cornell parents about our favorite hotels, restaurants, and things to do in Ithaca.

Or questions about Cornell and dorms and meals and academics …

Seriously, I think it’s a good idea - my D and I visited Cornell this summer and could not get a hotel room during the weekend freshmen were moving in, so we had postpone our visit by a few days. Any recommendation of an affordable hotel in the area?

Sorry, if this message is in the wrong thread.

NJMom23 - I think you’ve made the right decision. I am in the same boat - no FA on the horizon, but I am so proud of my D - she got accepted ED! So, yes, we’ll foot the bill and look at this expense as investment in her future.

You can get Econo Lodge in Ithaca for $140/night. I like HIlton Garden in Ithaca, it’s $220. I would book now because I am already seeing some hotels blocking those days in anticipation of raising their prices. The moving day is the 17th, but most people will get there on the 16th because you could be assigned early move in time. A lot of those hotels will require minimum 3 nights stay, but based on our past experience, leaving on Sat is plenty of time. If you book now, you may be able to get 2 nights instead of paying for 3.

I personally like the Marriott Courtyard out by the airport. I have friends that swear by the Residence Inn near Pyramid Mall. I have stayed many times at the Best Western which often has the best prices, but I think it’s pretty tired and scruffy for the money unless you get a real deal. The Statler is an amaZing treat – and priced accordingly.

NJMom - Did you talk to them today? Or will you just ignore the whole thing? I 'm just curious. PS congratulations to your son.

I stayed at the Statler last year - the week after Thanksgiving. Very inexpensive at that time. It was pretty enough and they bumped our rooms to give us a better view but I wasn’t very impressed. The only dining we could find open was the cafeteria style stuff - pretty awful.
Otherwise, we’ve used hotel points and have rarely paid for an overnighter.

Oldfort - where can I find out about getting into the reservation pool for my '13. I remember you got the lakeside place but didn’t you also go into the lottery??

Thank you. I’ll definitely take a look at all recommended hotels. I agree it is probably better to book in now, before RD applicants are notified :)

I made a reservation at the Statler. It is going to be a treat. They told me a parent called at 5pm when the announcement came out. It wasn’t me.

HA! (Are you sure it wasn’t you on the phone??) ;)

woody - we did rent a house by lakeside, we made a vacation out of it. There is a lottery for dorm rooms for the graduation. I don’t believe you need to do anything, your kid will be notified of the number. There will be a packet with to do list for the graduation.

Based on my reputation, people on CC could have mistakenly assumed it was me, that’s why I wanted to put it out there.

Ok, thanks!

He was excited to get his Cornell envelope in the mail today. I do have a few questions.
Should I book the hotel for move in day for just one night - Aug 17th?
What night(s) should I book for parents weekend?
When do we need to withdraw his other applications? I assume before the deposit is due.

My D withdrew hew other two applications on Sunday - the letter came in on Sat. She was OK withdrawing one of them, but really wanted to know what the outcome would have been for the other…Regardless, she decided to go ahead and not to take any chances. I also pointed it out to her that it might give someone else a chance that he or she otherwise might not have. She withdrew her applications via e-mail, and got confirmation today.

I also would like to know which dates to book.

[Cornell University - Academics - Academic Calendar](<a href=“Academic Calendar 2023-2024 | Cornell University Registrar”>Academic Calendar 2023-2024 | Cornell University Registrar)

Move in day is Aug 17th. They start very early. Each student is given a window to move in, it could be early in the morning. Most people get there on the 16th, especially if there are flights involved. There are events on Sat for parents, and they leave on Sun. With D1, we left late Sat afternoon because we were only 4 hours away and D1 looked like she was busy with her new friends already. Many hotels will require 3 nights stay, Aug 16th to 18th (Thu to Sun).

Parents weekend - Oct 19-21.

There are not that many flights to Ithaca (there is Syracuse), if you are coming from far away (international students), might as well book those flights alreay.

oldfort you got me nervous so I booked a room for Aug 16th and another one for Parents weekend. We live about 4 1/2 hour drive, so we definitely will be staying over.

Thanks for your great advice.

Thanks, oldfort. We live about 4.5-5 hrs drive, and I would like to get there a night before - will be booking a room for 2-3 nights. I’ll look up hotels tomorrow. Statler is great, but $$$. With all new spendings coming up, I think I’ll try something cheaper.
