Help! Applying for admission to a new school after a semester of college.

I'm currently a 1st semester college freshman who choose to attend a state school that offered me a full-ride scholarship and perks for being a National Merit Scholar. The problem is that I'm finding this school is definitely not the right fit for me because of it's weaker overall academics and lack of school spirit. In hindsight this upsets me because I turned down a great list of schools (Caltech, USC Trustee Scholarship, Notre Dame, U of I Chancellor's Scholar) to attend here.

I've begun to look into transfer programs to different schools for next year. Notre Dame is probably my top pick right now, however I have come to discover that ND is currently not accepting transfers for my major (Mendoza school of business)

My question is this: is it possible to reclassify yourself as a first-year student and apply for freshman admission (acknowledging the fact that my courses I'm taking this year would not count towards anything)? From what some other schools have posted, I believe that many consider anyone with only 1 semester of college completed a first-year student. Could I possibly take next semester off (as a gap semester), and plan to restart in the fall?

Thanks in advance for any help. I know this is probably not a commonly discussed problem, and I will be contacted ND admissions soon, however any help in the meantime will be much appreciated!

Depending on the college, classification as a transfer student can range from taking 1 post-HS class to anything short of a full year of post-HS college coursework.

I just looked a NDs website and I don’t see anywhere where they define a fr or transfer applicant. It is late at night and I might have missed it ;), but I think you will need to call them and find out what their definition of a transfer student is.
