Help Assess My Situation: Doing EXTREMELY Badly

I have already royally screwed myself academically.

I didn't care about academics (which will be apparent if you scroll down); however, circumstances have recently changed and I have a renewed academic interest.

Should I even both continuing my education in hopes of transferring?

Let's speculate that I receive As for the following Spring and Summer semesters and manage to get a hold of stellar professor recommendations. Would I have a reasonable chance of transferring to a decent school such as a SUNY or University of Rochester?

High School:
Rank: Mid 20/30s out of around 250 students (I can't remember these numbers exactly)
Grades: 91 average overall. Started with straight As, but did progressively worse every semester.
Standardized Tests:
SAT Math - 710
SATI Verbal - 650
SATII Math IC - 770
SATII Biology E - 620
SATII Writing - 610

Colgate:
I did terribly here. I received Fs for the majority of my classes with probably under a 1.0 GPA over 3 semesters. I was academically suspended twice before transferring to a community college.

Community College:
I've spent 6 semesters here including 2 summer sessions. I have 11 Withdrawals and 4 Failing Grades. Surprisingly, my GPA here is still above 3.0 (most of the remaining grades are pretty much As).

For about 90% of my classes, I have missed more class than I have attended. Some classes I've only showed up maybe 2-3 times.

Out of the six semesters in cc, how many credits will you be able to transfer in? I do think you can get into a decent 4 year university (like Suny or Rochester) if you explain your renewed interest in your transfer essay.

I think you need to be fully honest with the college about what made you perform the way you did, even if you don’t want to disclose it here.

What I think an adcom would see is someone who still does not have his academic life in order.

What is your culmulative GPA between the two schools?

I don’t know enough about SUNY or URochester’s admissions process, but it seems to a layperson that between the culmulative GPA (probably around a 2.0?) and the blinding wash of Ws (11!) and 4 more Fs at your current school, that the overall picture is not good.

You probably need to apply somewhere where you meet the minimum GPA and there is no comprehensive review… because your academic profile does not seem to indicate (yet) that you are ready to succeed at a four year college.

My recommendation is to keep going to CC until you have proven to yourself (and the adcoms) that you can focus on school. If you don’t get into your transfer school this round, you may want to take a 1 or 2 year break to work fulltime. That will look good on your transcript, be a good essay topic, and will give you more time to mature and reflect why after all these semesters you still are not being serious abut 90% of your classes about basics like attendance.

So,

1) Why didn’t you go to classes?

2) Have you stopped the activity that created the environment that let you think it was OK not to go to classes?

Yes, you can salvage this. Finish the degree at community college. Go to class. Get stellar grades. After that, consider taking time off from school and doing something different. Work with inner city kids, or the underprivileged, or the mentally challenged, or the physically challenged, or the SPCA, or whatever you find meaningful. Get used to going to work everyday and having people rely on you. Get great recommendations from your supervisor. Focus.

Then, apply and get accepted. Go to school, go to class, get stellar grades. Graduate. Apply to grad school if you are still up for it. Repeat.

Best wishes for a wonderful new year!

Thanks for all the responses.

I have not checked how many credits will transfer over. I haven’t really looked into specific schools yet, i just threw out random names of schools :D.

 1. Basically, I didn’t have my priorities straight. It’s embarrassing to admit it, but I was addicted to World of Warcraft probably playing 85+ hours a week.

2) I don’t think my environment made me think it was okay to not go to class. Unfortunately, it was just me being an idiot. In other words, I don’t really have a legitimate excuse for the situation I’m in.

I’d also have to estimate barely above a 2.0.

I agree with you. This is what I’m currently planning to do.

I skipped a heartbeat when you said WOW is the reason for your grades. I can relate (sortof) because I was really into WC3/WOW during high school and didn’t live up to my potential. And your right, there is no excuse to get yourself out of this one.

You need to get straight A’s at a CCC for the next year and see if there is a way to retake the classed you failed for a better grade. You can get your GPA up to around a 2.5+ hopefully which will at least put you in the running for some state schools.

P.S. If you havn’t already, sell your characters and uninstall WOW. If you want to turn a new leaf, it needs to begin with getting rid of this major distraction.
