well, you seem to have already made up your mind.
there really isn’t that big of a difference btwn the 2 tbh
you probly also visited on weird/different kinds of days for each school as well. game days at davis contrast to the deadness of summer, and the same for cal poly. blah blah blah. it all depends. but i think you probably WANTED to feel like slo is a good fit for you.
so listen to your instincts, you’ll be a mustang either way :)

What? No way! UC Davis are the Aggies, not mustangs.

I can’t compare the towns because I don’t know very much about SLO. I can only tell you about Davis. Having a lot of locally-owned stores is part of the advantage and the charm of Davis. Once you’ve seen one Gap or one Bed Bath and Beyond you’ve seen them all. You’ll find that locally-owned Steve’s Place Pizza iin Davis s far better than any Little Caesars or Round Table chain pizza you ever had. And I stand corrected on cal poly football.

just fyi-

^ The official school mascot is the mustang. Students at UC Davis are referred to as Aggies in honor of the school’s agricultural heritage. Unlike most colleges, there is a distinction between the name for students and the mascot. There was a movement to change the school’s mascot from the mustang to the cow, but despite student support this was turned down after opposition from alumni. Many people will call the mustang mascot of UC Davis an Aggie, but this is not its proper name; the mustang mascot is named Gunrock. The name dates to 1921 when the US Army brought a horse named Gun Rock to UC Davis to supply high-quality stock for cavalry horses. The mustang mascot was selected to honor that cavalry horse.

Yes i freely admit that i like the way Cal Poly feels to me mostly from the students I met at open house and just what I seem to hear that it’s more of a chill area with the beaches–yes I know cold water–and atmosphere. I’m not saying that UC Davis kids don’t have fun. I’m sure they do. I just want to be able to enjoy my college years in all aspects. Academics being #1. But I want to be able to relax and take in everything else around me at the same time. I thought maybe the beaches and SLO area might be better for that. For some reason spending time socializing in Sacramento doesn’t sound as appealing to me. I know Tahoe is close for skiing. But I hear Cal Poly has a ski club too.

So now I just need to decide whether I should pass up the SLO life for the UC recognition. Or pass up the “UC” for the chance at a more chill area. I feel I will get a good education at either school. I’m the one who will have to put in the hard work. That has never been a problem for me in h.s.

Thank you for all your thoughts and advice.

In more than four years at UC Davis I NEVER heard them referred to as the mustangs - not even once. Never. It’s all Aggies, all the time.

Don’t take my word for it. Check out the school’s athletic site. They have a picture of a horse, but they are always called The Aggies:

[UC DAVIS, The Official Athletic Site](UC Davis Athletics - Official Athletics Website)

Aggies–mustang–aggies–mustang–

Sounds like a scene from the movie, Chinatown!

I wondered what that horse was doing on the new logo…never heard of any UC Davis team referred to as the Mustangs, though…as in the UCLA Bruins, the Cougars of BYU, etc.

I’m guessing that the administration wants to get the new generation of UCD students invested in the mustang, to forestall any more attempts to make the cow the university mascot…

obviously i know as a student that ucd is referred to as the aggies. it was a play on words to and i thot it a good way to show OP that the schools are really very similar.
maybe you should get acquainted with the slo div 1 fball team in our annual battle for the golden horseshoe ;-)

And as is referenced in Fight:

…Because the MUSTANG will show our team the way to fight!
Charging the enemy with all his might
So let’s go, let’s win, today’s the day the Aggies will fight fight fight!

GO AGS! :)

Honestly, I think that Cal Poly SLO is the one CSU that ranks up there with the UC’s. Great school, fabulous location. You should go where you like the vibe. If you were comparing Berkeley or UCLA with SLO then MAYBE the UC name argument holds water, but even so… Davis is a good school, but so is SLO. What a great atmosphere! When I hear of people attending that school I feel a bit envious, and I went to UC. Really, just follow your intuition, you can’t go wrong. Good luck!
