As a Boston resident who's staying close to home for college, I'm deciding between BU and Northeastern for a safety school. Even though one will be my safety, I still need to like it a lot; I mean, what if I end up only getting accepted to a safety?

Anyway, for people who know both schools or just one in depth, could you elaborate on these points and compare/contrast the two schools?

-Campus: beauty, dorm life, size (and ease of getting between classes and your dorm)
-Education: quality, rigor, variety of classes, job opportunities after college
-Students: class sizes, diversity, intelligence and intellectuality (I don't want to sound arrogant here, but I want to go somewhere where I feel like I'm intellectually matched, and people care about learning)
-Vibe: academic? party school? etc.

(At this point, by the way, I'm not entirely sure what I want to do in college, but I'm very interested in majoring in philosophy or psychology and being pre-law.)

Thanks so much guys! And if you have other suggestions for local, inner-city schools (Emerson?), throw them my way! :)

I think the biggest difference between the two schools is that Northeastern has a co-op program and BU doesn’t. I’d base the decision largely on if the idea of a co-op is appealing to you or not.

And Emerson is a fine school but only if you are interested in the majors that it has. The school is really focused on performing arts and communications so I don’t think I’d recommend it for psychology/pre-law.

Campus: Northeastern has the nicer campus. Large modern buildings and an actual defined campus. Some may like BU’s more urban non-campus feel (it is similar to NYU or GW in that it doesn’t really have a campus), so you should really visit to see which you like better.

Education: Pretty much equal here. Both schools have good professors and are known for graduating quality students. Northeastern has the edge in job opportunities after graduation due to its co-op program. From BU, you may have a harder time finding a job or internship.

Vibe: These are also pretty equal. Both are urban schools in Boston that attract the same general pool of students. I would say that Northeastern students are often more career driven while BU students are often looking for a more standard general education.

I would visit each school and see which you like better.

bump I’m in a similar situation as this guy, interested in pre law hoping to major in poli sci or econ interested in both school but wanted to know how they were in terms of those specific programs from anyone with experience
