Hi,
I’m always a little confused about this GPA calculating - I was living in Canada for three years where we really didn’t do that, but now i’m back in the US.
My new school DOES use a scaled system (5.0), but they will only scale my Honours classes, NOT my IB classes. Also, when calculating my GPA, should I include Art when it’s honors (pre-IB) and IB? Or only “academic” classes? Here are my classes and grades, please help me out. I have not omitted my H and IB art class.

I do not have any grades yet for Sr year, but they should all be in the 90’s.
Thanks for the help, i’ll probably edit my marks out once I find out the correct calculation.

What percentage is an A, A-/B+, B, etc.? Every county does it differently. In my school, an A is 100-94, B+ 93-90, B 89-84, and so on.. Then an A is equal to 4.0, B+ 3.5, B 3.0, etc. In the county next to us, however, an A is 100-90, B 80-89, etc. and I'm not sure about +/- grades.

In order to calculate your GPA you would need that information. Then you equate it to the number (A=5.0), add everything up, and divide it by the number of classes you've taken.

Of course, the easiest way would be to go to your guidance counselor and ask her. The computer automatically calculates it - it's probably already in your file.

Thanks..Yeah, I know about the whole different percentages (i've lived in three different states, I really think they need to standardize it or something!)

That's how i've been calculating my GPA, except using A as 90-100, B 80-89, etc.
I am not sure what my school uses - I should find that out. It's tricky because i'm doing a distance education school.

My school has 90-100 as an A then it goes down

80-89: B
70-79: C
69 and lower: F

So an A is 4.0, a B is 3.0 and C's are 2.0. We add l quality pt. to for each AP/IB class, and nothing for Honors, pre-ap/ib stuff. Some schools do it differently. At my school however, you would have 7 A's and 13 B's.

So your unweighted would be a 3.35. But if you take into consideration your VERY difficult schedule and IB classes, it will be very highly regarded. Weighted GPA's drastically vary from school to school, but at my school, you would have a 3.8. Most schools are going to really be interested in your class rank, however. Also, most universities have a system for recalculating GPA's. For instance, UGA gives a .5 quality pt. for AP/IB classes and none for honors. FSU, however, gives full quality pts. to all honors and AP classes taken.

For example if you take 4 classes and got grades of an A, A- B+ and C

Your GPA would be calculated as follows (Unweighted and all things being equal)

4 + 3.7 +3.3 +2 = 13

13/4 =3.25

For weighted GPA's some schools will add .5 to the grade for honors courses making the range (raising it to a 4.5 scale ) and 1 for Ap courses (raising it to a 5 point scale)

My advice is to see your guidance counselor so that you know exactly how it is done in your schools.
