Hi,
I'm transferring into CAS and wanted some housing advice from current Penn students ASAP!

In terms of housing, I'd like a dorm that:
a) is close to the major parts of campus (class, dining halls, etc.)
b) is very tight-knit and does a lot activities w/ residents (Since I'm a transfer, I really want to meet people)
c) is predominantly singles or has some singles

d) as a lesser priority I'd like a dorm that has a fair number of upperclassmen, but if the mostly freshmen dorms tend to do more w/ their residents, I'd rather pick a more tight-knit, active house.

Any suggestions??

I'm especially considering: Harnwell, Hill, Gregory, and Fisher-Hassenfeld, so any feedback on how these particular houses are would ESPECIALLY be appreciated.

Thank you so much!!!

a single in Fisher would be best for you, the Quad is very social, Fisher has a fair amount of upperclassmen and they tend to be bunched together, great location but its competitive to get in.

PS: I'm going to be an RA in Fisher so I can tell you that the house does have a lot of fun stuff through the year from trips to cookouts and whatnot.

Anywhere in the quad

Thanks penn_2010 and chocoman! Just out of curiousity, do either of you know anything about substance free housing in Fisher? Can you still specify if you want a single if you sign up for a residential program?

i would say that hill is definitely the most tight knit...there are lot of events for hill residents and it's really social due to the ridiculously tiny rooms and the lounges in the halls

however, there are very few upperclassmen and isn't predominantly singles, though there are nice corner single rooms. if you're engineering, you're literally five minutes away from all your classes, and there's a dining hall in the building itself.

Yes, Hill is tight knit. But you'll be living on top of your room mate. Literally (the rooms are excruciatingly tiny). Even though no one ever talks about them or, indeed, perhaps even knows they exist, consider Gregory or Stouffer. Both are renowned for the community they foster among their residents through frequent, small scale events that bring people together to chat over hot chocolate, cookies, and other yummy stuff. Both offer much more privacy than the Quad or Hill (Gregory is suite-style, so everyone has his own bedroom, and Stouffer has lots of singles available). Gregory is at the western edge of campus while Stouffer is slightly to the east of that, but how much of an inconvenience that is really depends on the particular classes you take (classrooms are located in buildings scattered around the campus).

I'll be returning to Gregory for the third year in a row this fall, so if you have any particular questions about the house I would be happy to answer them. Good luck with your decision.
