i go to the toughest school in the state of indiana, but i got a D+ in calculus ab b/c my parents fought and i was home alone with my brother all the time. to make things worse, my grandma got lung cancer, so my dad stayed with her in oklahoma for a month (this was all during my junior year). i've been going strong with a 3.8 UW gpa freshman/sophomore year, but i just got a 3.0 my junior year. i have a 2020 on my sats and have taken 13 ap/honors courses. do i have a chance to get in considering that D+??

You're in. No questions asked. WIth that SAT, and a 3.8GPA, you're not only IN, you're gonna get in as a DIRECT ADMIT (if you're applying to the business program that is).

no, i got a 3.8 my fresh/sop year, my junior, i got a D+ and a 3.0 gpa. sorry if that post was confusing, but i'm freaking out b/c i wanna get in, but that D+ might keep me from getting in.

What is your current cumulative gpa?

idk. how do u calculate that? my freshman gpa was a 3.6 sophomore gpa was a 3.8 ish and then my junior gpa was a 3.0

Normally, your end of year GPA, as reported on your last report card of the year, will be a cumulative gpa that includes all of your coursework up to that point. So, the report card you received at the end of your junior year would include a gpa that took into account 3 years worth of classes.

I say 'normally' because I can't be sure how your high school reports its' grades. I suggest you speak with your HS counselor. He/she can explain to you how gpa is calculated at your school. Also, since you are located in Indiana, your counselor should be able to give you good advice regarding your chances at IU.

My son's GPA at the end of his Junior year was 3.11. He had received no grades lower than a C- up to that point. He did take several Honors classes, though, which I think helped him. He applied in October last year and was admitted. He's not majoring in Business, but Psychology (that is subject to change, however). I will tell you, that in his last semester he got a D in Discrete Math, which is a difficult class. He received a letter from IU in late July indicating that they were "concerned" after reviewing his final transcript, and they hope he takes advantage of the assistance/tutors at IU. The letter also indicated that they understood that there may have been legitimate reasons for his lower grade, or that he may have lost focus (senioritis). I told him he better do well his Freshman year, cause they are probably going to keep an eye on him and his academics. I feel my son was very lucky to get into IU, as the admission requirements are getting tougher each year. He scored a 1650 on the SAT, which isn't too bad, and he also brought his final GPA up to 3.15 I would think with your high GPA, and strong SAT scores, that you will have no trouble getting in. We live in Indiana also. Something else that his HS Counselor told him was that there was a student that had a 3.6 GPA, but did not get admitted to IU. This student did not take any honors classes, though. I really do think they look at the difficulty of the classes you take. Good luck to you!

boss529 you shouldn't worry about getting in to IU...as my username points out...i FAILED calculus and on top of that i also got a D- For AP Statistics....i applied very early and got my acceptance letter November. with that many honors and AP courses...which is also what i did....they will see that you took a very rigorous course load and calculate that into their decision. In terms of getting into the Kelley school...regardless of your previous grades, as long as your cumulative is a 3.6 you are in. If its lower however, you can petition to get into KSB. my SATs were only 1870...but they only look at ur math and verbal making mine a 1320 so you should be fine.

also try to do well on your AP exams....i got 14 credits giving me a huge advantage when i choose my courses next semester...(ordered by how many credit hours you have)

wow guys. thanks SO much for the advice. i really appreciate it!
