Michigan was a reach school for me, but luckily I got admitted. I am very excited about all the great things Michigan has to offer but I am trying to decide if I can handle the tough academics. I worked very hard in High School to get a 3.9 GPA at a competitive school, but without many A/P's. I also had a 2120 SAT. I am in the College of LSA and not sure of what I will major in, but probably something like Psychology or Communications. How much work are the classes in LSA? Will I have time for anything other than studying? What is it like for most people? Any advice or perspectives from current or recent students would be greatly appreciated.

The curriculum is rigorous but you wouldn’t have been accepted if they didn’t think you could handle it. If you have a 3.9/2120, I would say that you were a match rather than a reach. Pyschology at Michigan is terrific as are many of the other fields in LS&A. You will work hard but you will have time for things other than studying. Time management is key because there will be more to do than you will have time for. Good luck and Go Blue!

Wolv when you say start in the summer, do you mean actually buy books for certain classes and just start reading? I’ve seen people mention getting a head start on classes in the summer but this seems a little odd to me.

You’re way overestimating how good UMich students are and how hard the classes are.

How is a 3.9 and 2120 a reach? Avg. GPA for UM is 3.76. Middle 50% SAT is around 2100, depending how you combine the categories. You’ll do fine. Just don’t get caught up in all the socializing and partying. You can do some, but remember that this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to grow intellectually and to get your career started.

Thanks. I am from the east coast so it has been difficult to get a clear read on what the academics are really like. I appreciate all the response.
