For my sociology class, the grade percentage is like this:
40% = midterm
50% = final
10% = attendance/participation

On the midterm, I got a 14.5 / 20
Attendance, I will be getting the full 10%
The Final is the only thing left.

Can I still get an A?

It will be pretty tough. You will basically have to ace the final real well if you have any chance. Sometimes a professor will give away an A anyway even if they notice a dramatic improvement (i.e. a 90 on the final as opposed to a 75 or whatever that is on the midterm). The fact that the midterm was 40% of your grade is going to hurt that chance.

i don't think so, but i'm not accounting for any curve.

It's not based on a curve. The STUPID TA graded my midterm (it was essay based). He didn't even put any comments at the end of my paper, and I feel I deserve a higher grade. I'm gonna go speak with my professor about this on Tuesday. Does anyone else have anything to say?

you need a 51/50 on your final to get a 90 percent. Who cares if you get an A or not? (i'm being very sincere here). It's just one class, and it's not like a B is the end of the world.

Fendergirl I totally respect what you said but for me I can't be getting these grades anymore since I've gotten too many B's and C's before. That's why each class grade is now crucial, as I'm working my arse off. I need these grades for law school.

Then do better next time.

(i personally would never take a class where a TA had anything to do with it, i don't feel they are qualified to be teaching NOR grading things.. so I can see where you're coming from, I just don't think fighting with the prof is going to change things. Good Luck though.)

If you get close and are a good student maybe the prof will bump you up to the higher grade.

good luck finding many schools where tas dont grade anything. even at lacs lots of profs get upper-level students to grade homework assignments. i know because i do it.

well, then i'm glad i didn't go to your school.

my school didn't have ta's, and every course was (still is) graded by the prof and taught by the prof.

I would never have went to my college if that had been the case.

Only if you can round that 14.5/20 to 15/20, but I doubt you can.

jesus, what if the TA or prof. reconsiders and I get a 15? then what? or even a 16

Here is the basic equation:

89.5 or 90.0 = .10(attendance) + .40(midterm) + .50(final)

14.5/20 = 72.5 grade
15/20 = 75 grade

Now assuming you get a 100 on the attendance, and a 89.5 is not a B, the equation would simplify to:

89.5 = .10(100) + .40(72.5) + .50(X)
50.5 = .50X
X would have to equal 101 for you to achieve an 89.5 overall grade.

With 15/20...
89.5 = .10(100) + .40(75) + .50(X)
49.2 = .50(X)
To achieve the 89.5, the lowest grade that you could receive on the final would be 98.4.
