HELP---can't decide---Case Western v. Lafayette---electrical engineering

Hi all,

I just learned that I got off the Wait List today at Lafayette (in the nick of time, eh?) and I need help in choosing a college. I've visited both and Lafayette seemed like more of a fun place, but Case Western seemed like it was a "better" college, academically speaking and in getting a job in four years.

Can anyone here give me a few pointers, especially in regards to the Electrical Engineering department at Case?

Thanks in advance for all your help,

Tim

P.S. I am familiar with both areas (Cleveland and Easton, PA) and it honestly doesn't matter to me. Just as long as I am leaving NYC, I'm fine with anything.

So you got into Case normally, and just barely got off the WL at Lafayette–Yet you think Case is “better”?

Both schools have great EE departments. Lafayette is a LAC, do you think that you would like to take classes in other areas as well? If so go to Lafayette.

Case is more of a research institution so you probbaly have more facilities and course offerings at Case.

However, Lafayette lacks a grad school so undergrads get the research opps that grad students would normally get. You will have great interaction with profs at Lafayette.

Lafayette-- Liberal arts aspect and the opportunity to work very closely with profs.

Case- More offerings in EE (more specialization and depth potentially), and more research taking place.

What is more important to you?

My son is in EE at Case. Some great profs, some so-so, probably like anywhere. Not a huge department, but I’m guessing it’s bigger than EE at Laf. I think you would be able to get deeper EE courses at Case, but be aware that not all of the courses in the catalog are offered every year.

I would think the biggest difference is the university vs LAC environment. Case is fairly small as an undergraduate university, but has a lot of other schools at the same site (med, dental, law, etc.) so seems pretty big.

On the east coast, I have noticed that not a lot of people are familiar with Case, so it may not buy you that much over Laf. in terms of reputation.

It would be a lot tougher to get to Cleveland from NYC, though!
