Hi! I am a rising senior that lives in the Dominican Republic. I am a US citizen but because i live in the DR I have less opportunities than what a US student has. I would like to know what my chances are of getting in the following universities knowing that I had limited opportunities: Brown, Johns Hopkins, Boston University, University of Miami.
(I am aiming for Pre-med)
I have taken honors courses in British Literature, Chemistry and Genetics
I will be taking AP courses in Calculus and English.
(These I are all that my school has to offer, if they had more I would have enrolled in those courses)
current GPA: 4.1
SAT: 2100
English is my second language. I am fluent in Spanish and can speak a little bit of french.
Extracurriculars:
3 years in Girls Varsity Soccer team, I hope to be captain next year
I was JV soccer captain my 9th grade year
played Girls Varsity Volleyball 2 years
Model UN
I also ike photography and drawing(hobbies)
I worked during the summer at a university in Puerto Rico to help with research on enterococci bacteria.
Leadership:
I have been a member of “Leaders in Training” a program that teaches the characteristics of a good leader and how to demonstrate them in your actions.
I have attended Student Leadership University(SLU) 101 in Orlando, Florida. I am part of my school’s National Honor Society and have been a class representative since the eighth grade. I was part of the group of “abanderados” at my school, a march with the excelling students that attend my school. Also I am a member of my school “Prefects”, a group of students from the senior class that are considered the top leaders at school. My role as a prefect is to be in charge of the Senior class, helping organize all of the class’ activities and events.
Volunteers:
I have been volunteering twice a month at poor schools in the Dominican Republic since 9th grade. I also go to a shelter for girls every Saturday to spend some quality time with them.
Again, I wish I had more opportunities here. Do colleges know the limited opportunities available for me? If not, how do I communicate it to them? Please any advice on my chances on getting into these colleges would be amazing! Also if you know any colleges that would seem like a good fit for me let me know.
What are your interests and what is your school budget? Also, what is your SAT breakdown (CR, M, W)? You could probably qualify for some scholarships, but improving your SAT score would make it more likely (depending on distribution)
What’s your parents’ budget?Have
you run the NPC on these schools and have your parents saidbthey could afford their costs, or do you need a scholarship?
Do you consider yourself Hispanic or Latina? How have you selexted such different universities?
All of these are factors for a more accurate " chance".
Premed is not a major, y could major in Spanish and complete the premed core and be eligible for med school; what subjects are you best at and interested in?
It’s probably not the best idea to go to JHU for it because everyone and their cousin has the same idea so your odds are lower there if that’s your goal.
@MYOS1634 I would heavily rely on financial aided scholarships to attend college in the states since it is expensive. My parents budget is about 8,000 which I know is not a lot compared to the price for these schools.
What does NPC stand for? (Im sorry Im just so new to college search and everything)
I am hispanic (I was born in Puerto Rico)
I have just started my college search and honestly I am feeling Kind of lost since I don’t anybody who has gone to college in the US. This is not my finalized list of schools. I just did some research on schools that have great medical programs that let you complete medicine in 7-8 year. Also schools that have a good acceptance rate to medical schools and are not known for having overly competitive students.
About the major, I will probably go with chemistry.
I appreciate you taking the time to respond and any feedback would be awesome. Since I am just starting to look for schools I don’t know where to look at because I don’t know to what type of school I could be accepted to.
Net Price Calculator => calculate how much college will cost your family with your own circumstances
Each college calculates differently. 100% need colleges promise to meet your financial need as they calculate it - and they may calculate it very differently so you have to run the NPC on a bunch of different colleges. There are 60-80 of those. Then you have non-need met colleges that simply give you whatever they want, regardless of how much you need. There are over 3,600 of them. Those may well give you merit money, ie., if you bring in test scores they find interesting, they’ll reward you for it. Some colleges are better than others at those rewards and how competitive it is to get them.
Knowing whether a 100% need college is affordable is the first step -because if it’s not, then you have to focus on colleges that’ll give you merit.
Because you are Hispanic, you may have a better shot at colleges located in areas where you’re quite under-represented.
Look into Davidson, Carleton, UChicago, Yale, for instance - 4 very different schools - what do the NPCs say?
@MYOS1634 So I went over their NPCs and they are affordable. After I know how much a college will cost which is the best way to determine if I even have a chance of getting accepted? The only idea I have of colleges are their GPAs and SAT/ACT scores, but how do I know if my ECs are enough? Do you think my application is strong enough to have a shot at ivy leagues or highly selective colleges? If not, how selective should the colleges I look at be?
and thanks for all the advice you have already given me it has helped a LOT
