Help! ChE class decision

Next spring, I need to take both ChE 317 and CH 318N (Organic Chem II). For ChE 317, there will be two professors teaching: Lloyd and Contreras. Many people recommends Lloyd 'cause he is good, while Contreras seems to be a new figure in this class. However, Lloyd's 317 collides with my CH 318N (taught by Grant Willson, the only class)!!

So, at present, I'm registered for CH 318N (Willson) and ChE 317 (Contreras).

I heard that although the department recommends us ChemE students to take CH 318N OrChem II for engineering), we can take CH 310N instead (OrChem II for pharmacy, etc) Do you recommend me to change CH 318N with CH 310N so that I can switch Contreras to Lloyd? How "important" is the professor for ChE 317?

Just fyi, but CH 318N and CH 310N are the exact same course…They just split the course numbers up so it’s easier for departments to get a “set amount of seats” in a course. However to get into 310N I think you might need to go talk to the chemistry department…At-least I did to get into orgo lab 210C. It’s really easy though and takes like 5 minutes.

I’m currently in 317 with Maynard…The course is going to be your hardest course regardless of who the professor is. Most of the actual learning in 317 comes from spending numerous hours struggling with the homework problems. UT is the 5th best ChE university in the U.S., so I don’t think any prof is going to “make or break” a class, especially 317. Just take it and pass it ;). Oh and one last bit of advice…317 starts out easy, but don’t become lax and get behind! :D. Best of luck to ya!

“CH 318N and CH 310N are the exact same course”

^No, the undergrad office says that in the later part, CH 310N will lean more towards Drugs while CH 318N toward Polymers. And I do want to take CH 318N, 'cause prof. Grant Willson is teaching it personally. He won National Medal of Technology, 2007 and I’m quite interested in joining his research group.

“Most of the actual learning in 317 comes from spending numerous hours struggling with the homework problems.”
^This really is a great news. I might take a chance and stick with Dr. Contreras, if this is true. I’m just afraid to have an inexperienced teacher who can’t explain properly or give the right material…

Another question, by the way. How tiring is CH 210C? How are we graded? Do you really spend 4 hours on lab?

Im in 317 with Dr.Maynard and let say its the hardest engineering course next to Tranport in the ChemE program. Dr. Maynard sucks. She is left handed and she covers her work up half the time so you cant read it. She never finishes problems. I got an A on the first test but after that the whole class average is below a 70. I heard Dr.Lloyd is even worse in grading. Just take Contreras and get it over with.

Thanks, I’ll just do that. I hope I can survive ._.
