I am a senior in high school and applied to a pretty broad range of schools for 4 year direct-admit nursing. So far, I have been accepted into all the schools I have applied to (listed below) for my major, but I have to wait to hear from SDSU, UCLA, and UC Irvine. With the following as options, I am unsure as to which school would be best for me. With that said, I am thinking ASU and TCU probably aren’t the right fit but I would still love to hear information you have about any of the schools.
-Arizona State University
-Texas Christian University
-University of San Francisco
-Case Western Reserve University
-Saint Louis University
-Seattle University
-University of Portland
Does anyone have experience with any of these colleges, either for nursing or in general? It can be first-hand or second-hand experience. I am really struggling to figure out which school would suit me best. I would greatly appreciate any feedback/opinions on these schools and their nursing programs. It is especially difficult because I have only toured one school.
I’m currently a freshman nursing student at SDSU and I remember checking this site all the time when I was applying trying to find out all that I could about the different nursing programs so I thought I would give back and give some info. First of all, going to SDSU has been the best decision I have ever made and I wouldn’t take it back ever ever ever. SDSU may seem like a less competitive school than other schools, but the SDSU nursing school is actually super competitive. It’s about 3% acceptance right now is what I’ve heard and everyone in the program is extremely smart. Like I said, I’m a freshman and I’ve completed my first semester with a 4.0. So if you’re thinking about going to graduate school, I think going to SDSU would be great because getting all As is perfectly attainable. And the classes are great and so interesting. I’ve loved all the professors. The nursing class is about 150 people so you get close and make great friends. I love everyone in the program, we are all super nice to each other bc we aren’t competing for a spot in the program since it’s direct entry. Class sizes are small for the most part because they are mostly just the nursing students along with some kinesiology, pre-PT, pre-med, nutrition, etc. and the classes are all super related to nursing so it’s always interesting. Plus we start clinicals sophomore year so overall the program is amazing. Also I recommend living in the nursing living community which is where I currently live. It’s a floor of nursing students in the nicest dorm building and we all live in suites which means an automatic group of friends all taking the same classes and studying together. Plus there’s an academic advisor on the floor who has specific tips for nurses. Overall going to SDSU for nursing will be the best choice you could make. Academics are great, I’ve learned so much, plus the social scene is amazing with great parties, Greek life, clubs. And even as a nursing student I am able to make time for those things. Plus the dorm has a pool so that’s pretty amazing. Anyways good luck
@cwimsnursing i’m going to sdsu for nursing this fall and this helped me out sooo much!! i was really worried that i would get bad grades but you saying that getting a 4.0 is attainable is so relieving. i’m currently filling out my housing application for the nursing committee and i’m not sure whether to pick double, triple, or quad. do you have any recommendations?
There are several considerations: Cost of attending, and NCLEX first time pass rates. Are you in state for California? What can your family afford to pay for your education. Do you have the financial aid packages for the admitted schools? Congratulations!
If you have a direct admit to nursing at any of these schools that would be a positive as well.
If you can’t visit try to get your hands on some good college guide books (ex. Fiske, Insiders Guide, Princeton Review) and read up on each school. These books can often be found in the guidance office or library.
I’m in a triple and I love it! All of the options are great it doesn’t really matter if you’re in a single double or triple. Being in a triple I definitely have made two really close friends with my roommates. But, the nursing community is suite style and there are 9 to a suite so having a single is almost equivalent to rooming with people just having your own room if that makes sense? Honestly you can’t go wrong with any option, it’s just preference. If you like your own space get a single, if you don’t want to spend excess money get a double or triple. @liquidsugar
as mentioned in post #4, direct admit is big. In fact if some of the schools offer it then I’d choose one of them over any others. You have a bad semester or get off to a slow starter start than you’d like, at a direct admit school you’re still going to be a nurse. At a school where you apply to enter the program junior year, maybe not…
@cwimsnursing I am also attending SDSU nursing this fall like @liquidsugar… I went to Explore Open House on March 18 and met some current students and toured the sim labs. I am super excited!! I hope to connect with more incoming and current SDSU students.
