Hey guys! I need some help deciding. I got into GaTech, CMU, UCLA, and UMich for ECE.
However, I am not too sure I will work as an engineer in the future. I’m interested in jobs like consulting, banking, and start-ups maybe! I liked the idea of ECE more but would like to know what is the difference in jobs for a CS student and an ECE student?
Between GaTech and CMU, which has better opportunities, recruitment, teaching faculty, campus, etc?? CMU does cost a lot… (but if there are a lot of pros, it’s worth it!)
Lastly, is it true that UCLA being a state school and has a huge number of students, it would be harder for me to get classes, get recruited and get opportunities, esp as I’m internat?
Thank you so much!!
All of these schools are top notch. You have not said which country you are from, but if it is Asia or South Asia, I would go to UCLA as you will likely find the local area more hospitable. Good luck!!!
yes I’m Indian but as I said I’m doubtful about opportunities for internationals at UCLA
UMich and CMU probably would offer the best opportunities outside engineering.
Also, GTech is also a public.
The major curriculums would tell you the difference between different majors.
Fabulous choices–congratulations!! Not sure what you are looking for in a locale, CMU and the Pittsburgh area are home to a lot of foreign nationals, and international students, profs, etc… particularly the Oakland area because of CMU and the University of Pittsburgh. CMU is right in the middle of a vibrant community–and Pittsburgh has become “hot” attracting quite a few diverse companies, Google and Uber have a particularly strong presence near the schools. Academically you are going to do great wherever you go. If you don’t want to deal with winter tho, CMU and UMich can be tough during those months–winter and gray skies seem to drag a little too long into April.
Best of luck!
Thank you so much!! Which is a better uni for recruitment then? CMU or GaTech? Which has the better alumni presence and prestige (just wondering)? @luloobee
Hi! Sorry I wasn’t on CC last couple days. I know CMU has an extremely strong alumni presence, with big dollar donations from good number going towards physical expansion of the campus. Tepper and Tata are the two that come to mind off the bat. Tech and business / bank / financial firms make CMU a prime recruiting target. Have you visited the campus? If your only visit was to a campus info session-- you may have been underwhelmed–other schools that my daughter and I visited had more dynamic info sessions. Try to meet up or get in touch with department profs, students, and the career center. My daughter ended up not applying there, very simply because she wanted to go school away from her home city, but she did do summer coursework in Electrical Engineering with Professor Sullivan–(EXCELLENT professor very competitive and demanding). Her impression from that experience is that CMU prepares students well and cares that their students succeed both in school and after graduation.
By the way, local lore is that when Google originally came recruiting to CMU they found that the wealth of talent available so strong and plentiful it only made sense to “open up shop” in the city as well. I would safely venture to say that Uber and the other tech companies that have since established their presence near the university did so for similar reasons.
