Help! College application advice needed!

Prof. Himmelheber:

Thanks for your response. Actually, several electonric AND written applications instruct the applicant to "CIRCLE (OR SELECT) ONLY ONE" in the SATB selection line. If two could be circled (or selected), it would not be such a problem. The appropriate option for a baritone is still not clear.

vocaldad

Vocaldad, remember, too, that at auditions, your son will be presesnting a theater resume and that is where he can truly specify his voice type and range. I would not worry too much about the line on the application.

Also, you were commenting about which part your son sings in a choral ensemble depending on the needs of the ensemble. But for answering about his voice type as a singer for theater, choose the one that most closely resembles his voice type and strength as a soloist, even though he has the range to sing bass or tenor.

vocaldad - I sent you a PM the other day in response to a message I got that mine were full and you had tried to send a message. I think I have room for 1 PM from you, after clearing out a couple of them, but e-mail works better for me.

My son sounds like yours - most comfortable as a baritone (which I believe is the same as bass 1), but sang tenor in school choir because he was needed there. His voice teacher suggested that we call him a lyric baritone when such a question was asked on the application.

I know nothing about it, but his voice teacher likened it to a mezzo soprano for a female and said that lyric baritone means a baritone who also can sing the high notes well.
