Hello!
I got accepted into the nursing programs at both Northeastern University and Boston College and I was wondering which is better?
I really like the location of Northeastern because it is integrated right into the city of Boston. Also, it is closer to the hospitals. I also really love the co-op programs at Northeastern and think that they open up a lot of opportunities, especially as a nursing student. However, I also really love Boston College and their strong academic opportunities and have heard many great things about their nursing program.
However, the tuition is slight more for BC than it is for Northeastern. Is paying that much more worth it to go to BC over Northeastern?
Thank you so much!
I don’t have a clue about how their nursing programs compare, but – while BC is smaller, probably more intellectual and has a better overall academic rep, I think you’d be totally justified in choosing Northeastern based on cost and your preference for its setting/location and co-op culture.
If they were close in price (say, $25k or less over four years, maybe a little bit more) my choice would be BC, because I’d want the major D1 sports atmosphere and would not want the co-op thing. But I’m not you. So choose based on fit and finances.
Northeastern. I’d be the opposite of @prezbucky No D1 sports and definitely co-ops.
As mentioned, it depends on the size of the gap. Both programs will put you in good positions when you graduate but have very different campus and environmental feels. Which do you feel is the better fit?
Generally, it seems like there are positives in both - if it’s really that close and there’s any sort of meaningful price difference, go with the cheaper one for sure.
Have you gone to the admitted student days at both?? Where are you from?
I live in Boston….10 minutes from both schools. My daughter is a freshman at BC and I went to grad school there.
They have way different feels!
At BC you will get a true campus feel, if that’s what you are looking for.
Northeastern has no true campus quad, so to speak. You are essentially living in the city. At BC you have the best of both worlds if that matters to you.
Also, re housing….my daughter has two freshmen friends there….their dorms are about as far from main campus as you can be! I know its not what one mom expected for her kid as they said the freshmen would be on campus!
Ditto size…not sure of the NU nursing program size, but BC only admits ~100 students a year. You def have individual attention there!
BC is a great school academically and the Jesuit commitment to education is top notch (not that you need to be Catholic to feel 100% at home there)
Re cost….while I know that at Northeastern, you are paid to do internships, I assume you pay for 5 years over four? So maybe the cost evens out??
I know kids from BC have great internships and post graduation jobs. My thought is that with just 100 students, they really focus on helping the kids get jobs or go on to grad school.
I guess bottom line it depends on the environment you want!
You still pay for 4 years of tuition, so the total cost is still cheaper.
Northeastern’s program is a similar size, with 512 students total over 4-5 years worth of students. About 100 per year, just like BC.
Northeastern has multiple quads and the main one if you look at Centennial Commons. It’s indeed more city than campus but is a median between BC and BU’s campus.
