I am reviewing my son's common app before he sends it out for EA deadline. His extracurricular activities are all about music. On common app, he grouped them all together in one entry. Should he separate so he can highlight the different music activities? It's strange on the common app that the sport activities have so many entries, but for music, only instrumental or vocal. Please help! Thanks!

Bust them out to provide more detail and show the depth of involvement.

Yeah, I felt common app disregarded instrumental unless you broke it down - so now my ds has about 6 things that are all “music-instrumental” - so be it.

I think the Common App is badly designed and I think one should approach it from the point of view of presenting yourself in the best possible light. It’s certainly easier to show depth of involvement if you break up the various musical activities. I’m pretty sure my son had three entries - one for the freshman year orchestra where he was concert master, one for the regular school orchestra, and one for giving concerts at the Senior Center.

Thank you all for your responses. It helps a lot! Hope he will have time to re-construct his activities section to showcase his efforts and contributions to his school’s music community.

The text box for additional information would be a good place to expand if he thinks the table limited him.

Also, do not overlook the possibility of a separate resume, especially if he is sending a musical supplement, or the possibility of an additional recommendation from a music teacher, conductor…

My Ds split out their music activities–marching band, wind ensemble and non-school orchestra. Each activity had its own leadership positions, awards, and even instruments.

I would split them up, try to list as many things as possible.
