Im entering my junior year and finally get to start seriously looking at schools! A bit about me, Im a slightly above average student but I think my interests and involvements outside of the classroom set me apart. Im cofounding a company worth a couple million dollars, have solid references and connections from these businesses and have been active in the startup/entrepreneurship community in my area. So I think my success already in business helps set me apart.

My current list includes

Syracuse
Penn State
Bucknell
Colgate
Northeastern
Loyola MD
UVA

Im open to other suggestions based upon my interests and accomplishments that I have provided. Thanks!

oaky then, I have about a 3.8 in all honors on a 4.0 scale. AP isnt available for me until senior year. I have not yet taken the SATs… Im entering junior year

I live in PA. Money is important don’t get me wrong but wouldn’t prevent me from applying. Im looking for something where i can go for less than 30,000 a year. That being said if I could pay $10,000 at Penn State or $45,000 at Bucknell it would be a nobrainer

a 3.8 is definitely above average. so, too, are the ECs. With these pieces of info, this looks like a good list. UVA is a reach, and the rest are matches. Yeah, I know, the SAT could screw my calculations.

Have you run the net price calculators on the websites of each school? We know what PSU will cost you. What do the npcs say about the others?

Thanks guys. I am basing my estimates of Penn State on what has been paid by others similar to me. According to College Board, Penn States average aid/scholarship package is just over $16,000. I have not yet run the numbers for the others.

I am trying to formulate a solid list of schools on various levels of academic reputation and cost. So far it looks like this:

I need a few more “locks” (though I know its never a lock). I feel good about my shots at PSU, but its far from my favorite and the others are 50/50 whether I will get in. But I need a few more schools that I can get excited about and still have a good shot at getting into.

You don’t have the data that you need to assess the probability of admission. Do well on your SAT and everything on your list would be a reach or a match. I especially don’t see Bucknell being a reach for you.

If your company is worth a “couple million dollars”, I think that would greatly reduce any financial aid you might get. Do you co-own this company?

Do not just take the “average aid” that Penn State gives and assume you will get that. Run the NPC using your income and your assets and your parents’ income and assets.

How much can you and your parents contribute (absolute bottom line) each year for college?

Yeah, these average aid estimates are useless, since very few of us are average. Another thoroughly pointless statistic brought to you by the industry.

I don’t own the company, I suppose you could call me a cofounder, being that I have been working closely with this company and have contributed to the development of it. That being said I planned to use my involvements with the company as leverage to get into a better school. The way I see it, there aren’t many 16 year olds that have had this type of experience and I am hoping that it demonstrates my interest and passion for entrepreneurship and maybe goes to show I could potentially be successful someday.

From a financial angle, I have not exactly made a lot of money from this company. I look to emphasize the value of the company only to demonstrate that it is much more than a lemonade stand persay. That being said, my parents are both teachers so not the wealthiest. I expect to receive some aid, whether financial aid or merit based. I am hoping that if I were to get into a school like Colgate or Bucknell then schools like PSU may want me more and offer me some money. I am basing this off of a friend of mine who got into Princeton but got a full ride to PSU. Of course every case is different and I realize this.

I will look more into calculators and whatnot to get an idea of what I can expect to pay. Thanks!

What about Babson, Bryant, or Bentley?
Indiana Kelley if you can pay 40K/year (not sure you’d qualify for merit aid and there’s no financial aid OOS).
Dickinson (International management major, internship abroad).
Northeastern (co-op in your business’ field).
