I was accepted into UCLA under pre-BizEcon and while it is a great program it's no where as impressive as it could be. And many I've talked to have said it's one where many can breeze through. After college I do want to obtain an MBA and so I know it doesnt neccessarily matter what major I have now but I don't want to have a low paying job when I'm out of UCLA. Thus, I'm looking into double majoring but I don't know what yet. UCLA has the units restriction thing so it makes it really hard to find something else to major in. I'm thinking along the lines of majoring or minoring in an engineering major or take the req's for pre-med because I want to keep my career options as open as possible. What do you guys think about this?

Wow, I heard exactly the opposite regarding BizEcon...

BizEcon @ UCLA isn't impressive?

if you're thinking about engineering, you should've been admitted into the samueli school by now. people from the college of letters and sciences usually dont/can't minor in engineering.

bizecon is impressive... not as impressive as berkeley's haas of course, but UCLA grads are highly recruited. i'm not sure if it's a breeze, but it sure isn't for some students at the lower division since they try to weed ppl out cuz it's too popular.

as for obtaining a MBA, it doesnt matter what you major in. well, sort of. basically, you need to major in something that can get you an entry level job. anything marketable really. after that, then the major doesnt matter anymore because the business schools only care about your work experience or in other words, what you've done since you've graduated.

taking the pre-med core can be a good idea. giving you science training can open up doors to say something like the biotechnology business, which is popular of the foreseeable future.

I was wondering about the same thing as abc123def. Why don't you take a look at this website if you're interested in majoring in engineering.

http://www.seasoasa.ucla.edu/change.html

BizEcon at UCLA is impressive but it's just not as impressive as Berkeley's business degree. So in a way to make my future resume look better I want to minor or major in something else.

abc123def,

if you're looking to make your resume impressive, majoring or minoring in something else is of little help. what will make your resume look impressive is your WORK EXPERIENCE. a decent GPA only confirms your intelligence, but the internships and work experience is what business employers look for and that's where they'll draw their confidence in you from. double majoring or minoring may make you slightly versatile, but it's not a significant boost on the resume. if anything, the major or minor should target a field of business that you're interested in, since business economics is general for all businesses.

first of all, don't worry about things that are still quite a distance away.
You are technically undeclared. You have nothing yet.
You should focus on doing well in your lower division classes, and if that goes well, seek out internships and build up your resume with these jobs.

that's the only way you'll get better offers later on.

from what i've seen, b-schools want to see 4-5 years of work experience out of you before they take you into their mba program.

and don't expect to bank a lot straight out of undergrad. Be happy with <$50000.

many people in the business world don't do work related to their undergrad major. so don't worry too much about that. Doing premed in addition to bizecon won't do shiet because premed science is too basic. you just can't do anything with it.

Yeah...I know that coming out of undergrad I get little pay. I want to minor or double major in something else because employers know that when they hire engineers they are hiring employees with a strong work ethic because obtaining an engineering degree is hard work. I want to do another major or minor to have that same appeal... that I too can be a hard worker. My idea of doing pre-med along side of it was just simply to show that I could handle the work load and have myself look more impressive.

I don't mean to insult UCLA's BizEcon its just I came from a highly competitive high school and many students I've talked to said high school was harder than BizEcon at UCLA...

trust me, having impressive internships and work experience will make your resume look much more impressive than adding another major or minor. majors and minors aren't something that people worry about if they're entering the business world. no one cares really. your recommendations from your internships and work experience will show your work ethic, not your major or minor. if you're really going to enter the business world, i hope you understand that sooner or later.

and just because a major isn't difficult doesn't mean that it's not respected.

there is no minor for any engineering. u would have to double major. also, there was a post earlier about ppl worried about going over the limit. the bottom line is that u can petition to go over the units limit but u need to plan ur courses and GEs wisely. one thing is for sure, u probably wont graduate in 4 years probably like 5. 1 yr is a lot of time to work and get experience. as others have pointed out, work experience seems to be more important so not sure if u wanna do it.
