Hey guys!
I have decided to go to HKUST, as I have mentioned in my thread before, just want to make sure I'm right in choosing it over US and UK!
Please tell me what you think !!

Universities accepted to:
Georgia Tech, Illinois, U Michigan, Purdue, Rose-Hulman, Kettering, Franklin W. Olin, Imperial (UK), HKUST, University of Texas-Austin, University of California-Berkeley.

Waiting to hear from:
National University of Singapore, Rice, Cornell, Carnegie Melon.

Rejected/Deferred by:
Cooper Union

Reasons for going to HKUST:
1. 3 years course instead of 4
2. Asian experience and can learn Mandarin (Chinese)
3. Cheap and also Full Scholarship offered to me (US around quarter of a million dollars)
4. Close to home (parents live in Shanghai right now, and we are Indians, so India is close too)
5. Hong Kong is a BEAUTIFUL place and the HKUST Campus is amazing!!!
6. Big University (unlike Rose-Hulman, Kettering, Olin, and Cooper Union)
7. Great for Mechanical Eng, was established in 1991, and is already 24 in World Rankings!!
8. Economy and Job market is strongly moving towards Asia, China being the hub !!
9. Can do my Post Grad from Stanford, or MIT in US and get that exposure too, plus will take the exchange program at HKUST for a term in US!

What do you guys think ?!?! Any suggestions, criticism will be of GREAT help !

Yes. Go to HKUST. Anyone who brags about all their admissions and scholarships like this doesn’t need to be stateside. I can’t imagine this sort of bragging would be considered charming in the UK either.

I am almost in the same situation as you.
I am debating over USA/Canada/HKU/HKUST

And I noticed how you said “can go to stanford, MIT” etc for graduate school. How is that a reason? for HKU? Is HKUST specially noted for sending its students to top tier schools for grad?

I am just trying to get as much info from someone, instead of a website, for reasons to go to HKUST or HKU so i can make a better decsions.

Thanks for your help!!!

P.s Out of curiosity, how did you get accepted to four USA universities ? Isn’t ED only for one school and if you get accepted you “must” go? and the RD decisions come out (generally) end March.

@ Modadunn: I need others’ comments and thoughts to see what people think about my decision! Because we live in a society and have to do stuff that best appeals to others… Although this might not relly change my decision, but i’ll be aware of what criticisms i need to be prepared for !!

@ Olymom: I dont mean to brag, i’m just telling you where all I have gotten in, and why i’m going to HKUST!! I mean if this sounds like bragging to you then I can tell you I got a horrible SAT score of 1890!!

@ light10491: Thanks for understanding the correct tone of my post!!

@ iRunShow: At last someone who knows what i mean!!
By saying I can go to US for post grad I meant if the whole issue about going to US is to get a degree from US, then I can do that even at Postgrad level , which is what really matters! Yeah i’ll have to get a HIGH GPA for it but thats achievable wth some efforts! And yes HKUST has sent many students to MIT and Stanford for Postgrad!!
The reps who came to our School also said the same, and a friend of mine at the Uni told me that, even the brochure advertised the same!! Because initially I was a bit skeptical about the 3 yrs course, as the US Unis could be sticky about it, but then I found out it is acceptable and many students do got to GOOD Unis for Postgrad from HKUST!! That is where I thought which Uni can pay me enough scholarship amount to ive me a year of studies back !!!
I have been offered admission to all those Universities because I applied under Early Action thingy, I had done Early Decision (binding) for Cooper Union but they deferred my application !! Thats why i got the decisions early and can accept them by May, some I will reject cause the deadline for accepting the offer is Feb!!

Oops! My bad! My application for UCB is in the review process…
Thanks for pointing that out Hopter, i’ll post an edit note! Can we edit posts too ?!?
Although my Counsellor did call UCB regarding our applications for 3 of us who have applied to UCB, and they said the applications were complete… But considering I was accepted to UM, my counsellor is also hopeful about me getting into UCB… Its def not for sure though!
UCB was my 2nd choice after Cooper Union, but because of the economic crisis and the scarcity of funds i’m 100% sure that International students will not get any scholarships and the fee is on the upper end too… Is anyone in UCB who can help me find out if there would be any International students scholarships/aid this year !!!

Imperial would be 3 years too. How did you hear so quick from UT given that you are OOS? You have many great choices - location wise HK and London will offer opportunities that are more international.

Really ?!? I didn’t know Imperial was three years too! Thats a point to consider, but still Imperial is really expensive!
UT gave me a decision because I had applied really early and had even filled out the request form for Honours and housing! haha… Its a rolling decision process, although you are correct in saying the decision normally come out in March-April, but lots of students get it earlier depending on when you had applied and finished you application… I even called them couple of times to check my status and ask them if they needed anything else from me, I made it pretty clear/obvious that I wanted a decision asap because I was expecting to hear from Cooper Union and G Tech… In all my applications I finished all the required forms as soon as i could ! Only sending the TOEFL scores was an issue!

You are right, Hk is really global and HKUST has a tie up with some 200 diff Universities if i’m nt wrong!!
What Universities have you applied to ?!

Suspicious post…how could you have heard from all of these universities already? Just go to the college you want to go to. What is the point of this thread?

I just don’t know why you guys come here to say that she’s suspecious or say bad thing about posting this thread… no matter it’s real or fake info, it’s not gonna kill you. All things that you lose are just few minutes writing something that would help her make a good decision.

In my opinion, you seem to like HKUST a lot. If it’s me I will want to stay in England or US coz I live in Asia all my life LOL. I think you should pick ones with the largest aids, then consider about their locations if they are where you wanna live-can you imagine youself being in such surrounding? If you think that you will enjoy your life in HKUST, I don’t see why you still have to be hesitate-GO FOR IT!

Thanks thebigcheese121 !!! just few posts back someone had said why I was asking others, and it was exactly because of this… Its just easier to make your decision, if people agree with you on it!
