Help! Conflicted!

Long story short. I'm conflicted with college plans and I need help since my counselor is ZERO help and my parents are always busy with work. Anyway my sole reason to go to college is because I want to go away from home, explore, and leave the influence of my parents. I don't have anything in store for my future, I don't know what to be, I don't have any clue nor any future plans besides moving so just going to college off-island (Guam to WA) is a big investment on a smart kid who doesn't even know what she wants to be. Then one day our local university did a presentation on Army ROTC and I see thats an opportunity and its finally hope in my bleak future. Should I do it? I believe I can do ROTC, it's just that my desire to leave this small place is too strong. I looked into doing Army ROTC at mainland university's but i don't know... I'm just scared.

Try your best in looking for information about the program and speak to people who have attended the program. This would help your idea of what you’d want to do with your future.

I think that you need to take a minute to do some soul searching. Since your main objective is to leave Guam, then leave, that’s clear. The next question is the method of leaving, through college or the Army. Before this presentation did you have any interest in joining the military? Are you okay with potentially dying overseas somewhere? I don’t have a problem with the military, my friend is going to join the Marines, but I just couldn’t do it. Also, with the college, it sounds like you would be going to college just for the sake of going. Are you aware of how low the college graduation rate is? It’s about 53% in 6 years. So that means that about half of all college students waste money by even going. Unless they’re rich, they would have been better off getting a job. If you are determined enough to go to the school and graduate, then the more power to ya but in the manner in which you are speaking, you sound like my sister. She lived under pretty strict rules at home, wanted to get away and so she went! She is now 26, has 2 kids, crap husband, working a menial nursing home job, and has yet to get a stable home. She still hasn’t paid off her loans for the one year that she was at college and the loan company unexpectedly took her whole tax return last year to help pay for it. So if you do decide to go to college, for the love of all that is holy, graduate!!! Research different careers that you might want to do, I recommend using [U.S</a>. Bureau of Labor Statistics](http://www.bls.gov).

Good luck!
