I'm applying to 9 colleges, and most of them have November 1st deadlines (I'm doing early action). I took the ACT for the first time back in April, and I took it again this September. I just got my scores back from the September test online, and they're ready to be reported. However, I don't know when I should send off the scores to the schools I'm applying to. My scores for the September test are better than the April test, so should I not even bother sending the April test?

Also, I just took the SAT a few days ago, and am taking it again on November 2nd. I don't have any other previous SAT test scores on file, but should be getting them back from my recent test this month on the 25th or so. I also think I did better on the SAT than on the ACT.

I've heard that scores take about 5 weeks to reach the universities, so no matter what, they'll receive them after the application deadline. Does this matter?

I'm almost done with my applications and essays so I'll probably be submitting my applications within 1-2 weeks at the most. Should I wait until I submit them before I send my test scores (or wait until I get my SAT scores before I send any test scores), or should I go ahead and send them my most recent ACT scores right now before I submit my applications? Does it matter if I were to send my ACT scores now, then submit my app (but they'd get my scores sometime next month probably after the deadline), and THEN send them my SAT scores once they're available? What if my ACT scores aren't good enough for them; will they wait until they see my SAT scores before making a decision?

You should send the scores that are ready now. It may take 1-2 weeks or even longer for the school to receive it and link to your file. Some school have strict deadline including scores and transcript. To submit your Oct SAT score on time for 11/1 deadline, you still may use the free score reports. But make sure you have your ACT score in first just in case.

Agree - go ahead and send ACT right away as well as Oct SAT for those schools where the Nov sitting will not be considered. Then use your free reports from the SAT to send the Nov results as soon as possible to the schools where the Nov test will be considered. You can check with each school to see whether the Nov SAT results will be considered. You’re right to be concerned that - Nov might be too late at some schools. You can note on your apps that you expect to take the Nov. SAT so colleges know they should expect those scores. In any event, you don’t need to send both ACT score reports other than to schools that require all test scores. Most schools will want just your report from your highest composite. Check the website of each school to see whether they require all scores.

For some schools (e.g. UMich) that has strict deadline for EA, they may still consider later scores if they arrive before their review. However, you need to have a completed application including previous scores by the deadline. That is why I suggest you to send in the ACT scores first just in case. You do need to put a note on your application to indicate you have upcoming scores though if possible.

You should send ACT score now; if you do so it will be delivered to colleges before Nov 1. If you want the October SAT score to be delivered to the college by November 1 then the way to assure that is to go into your test registration with the College Board now and identify the colleges as ones to automatically receive scores upon release. You can identify up to four for free and you can add others for an additonal fee. You have to make that identification by Monday, October 14. If you do that the test scores will be delivered to the college on the day they are released to you on-line or up to two days before that.
