I’m very confused about what happens during pass 2 and how to get on waiting lists and what not.

I ended up going last in my group during orientation and as a result got stuck with classes that I REALLY don’t want to take and that I have no interest in. I got an English class and HUM 60, which I want to keep, but I also got in Plant Biology and Primatology…I would take pretty much anything that’s not one of those. I only signed up for them anyway because they were all that was left at the end.

But I’m confused…is there a limit to the amount of units that you can have at one time? That is, do I have to drop these classes before I can try to add another?

How many classes can you waitlist for at one time? When do you find out if you actually get into the class?

Also, maybe someone out there has taken one of these classes and could tell me how you found them, just in case I can’t get anything else?

In other words, what would be the best course of action to take here?

waitlisting for the classes you want is the best thing you can do right now. I have always been waitlisting. If the class you are waitlisting is a huge 100+ class you are most likely to get in. on small classes like english or labs, those are harder to get in with waitlist. the max unit is 19 so you might have to drop a class before adding another if it exceeds the limit. You might also want to go back the registering page to check if any of your classes that you want are open due to people droping. you can keep changing and waitlisting until 2 weeks into the school year so dont worry too much

Yup... what momotudy said.
To waitlist, you just go to register for the course, only instead of it saying the class is full & you can't enroll, it'll add you to the waitlist and show up on your course listing as "waitlist - # __ "

If you are one of the first few on the waitlist, your chances are good - especially if the classes are large. I know for the chem 2 series, there are tons of people on the waitlist for certain sections at good times, but in the end they'll get enrolled in a different section at a worse time. So, that's something to keep in mind.

As people drop a course, you'll move up on the waitlist until you are eventually enrolled. You'll need to just keep checking SISWEB. If you are still waitlisted when classes start, you may (depending on the course) need to talk to the head TA or the professor about getting a PTA number (Permission to Add). Professors will issue PTA numbers if there is room in the classroom to seat more people than the class size cap allows. In the case of gen chem, it's the head TA to issue PTA numbers, and they'll do so outside of the lab part the first few days of class to make sure people are in sections that have lab space for them. Other courses with lab work in a similar way.

I've only been waitlisted once (amazing). I was #12 on the waitlist for an upper devision English course (now university writing program course), and by the time classes started I was #6. Unfortunately in a class size of ~24, in a computer lab with exactly that many computers... my chances weren't that good. I still went to class everyday and a couple days before the last day to add the course the professor gave me a PTA number. Even though there were people ahead of me on the waitlist (I was #3 by then), the professor gave me priority because I actually showed up.

i have a question also. i just waitlist for a few classes but i can't seem to find where the number i am on the waiting list? where can i see where i stand on the waiting list?

thanks everyone, for the advice. It turns out I didn't need to waitlist at all! I found an open spot in an African American Studies class and a linguistics class, so all is well :)

is it impossible to register for two same class but different time? i want to register eng class for different time but i am afraid to drop the one i have rite now cuz this one is not on the list.

Yeah, it's impossible to be signed up for same class, but different times. What I did was open two windows, drop the class I was originally signed up for, and then go to the other window (already opened at the registration page w/ the class I want) and register for the other class.

entadus, chem is a bit harder for wait list because their are limited space for labs. but you will still get in. The worst would be getting a crappy lab time. Math classes are really easy to get in for wait list, as long there are spaces available in the lecture hall, you can get in especially if your in mat16 where there are no discussion.
