So I had a problem earlier this year where I took time out of school and didn't apply to colleges due to a family problem. However, after that was done few colleges allowed me to apply. The three schools that admitted me and I narrowed it down to are University of Texas, University of Wisconsin, and the University of Michigan.

University of Texas: Austin was nice, the campus didn't look to nice however. Academics are great and my fin aid leaves me with 4000 to pay a year.

University of Michigan: The academics are slightly better then the both and Ann Arbor was ok. Nothing out of the extraordinary. However, I would have to pay 10k a year. It's not much of a problem but my parents and I do not believe we should be paying 6k extra for this school especially since the only thing it has on Texas on Wisconsin is the slight higher rank.

University of Wisconsin: Campus was gorgeous as was Madison. Academics are good and the cost would be 4.5k a year.

Are you interested in any particular subarea of biology, and does any of them have better course work and research opportunities in that subarea?

What post-graduation goals do you have? Be aware that most pre-meds do not get into any medical school, medical school is expensive, and biology majors’ job prospects at the bachelor’s level are generally low paid, so avoidance of debt (and saving money for medical school if you get in) is typically very important.

A difference of $2,000 over the course of four years is not a big deal. That’s not the kind of price difference that makes one choice obviously better than the other.

Lookio, which do you prefer? Both UT and UW are good, both offer a great social scene, and both offer plenty of research opportunities, although the exact subfields they’re decent in may differ. If I were in your situation, I’d write a list of pros and cons and go from there.

Honestly I haven’t gotten to specific into which Bio I would want to do so to be on the safe side let me just say General Biology. I heard Wisconsin has the best biology program out of the three. And yes I plan to attend medical school which is another reason my family and I are beginning to look away from Michigan (even though I got a scholarship that brought down to cost from 55k to 11k), However, my counselor is advising Michigan but I htink he is saying that just because Michigan is ranked a bit higher on the USNWR.

Loved the beautiful campus
Madison is awesome as I have witnessed (also as many mention it is the best college town in America)
Slightly better Bio program
Loved the whole lakeshore setting
The Terrace I believe they call it is a really nice spot
State Street is fine!
I hear its a party school, not much of a partyer but I guess it can be a nice way to meet people
More out of state students
I’m a varsity wrestler so the fact the Wisco has a wrestling team can be beneficial even though i don’t plan on wrestling D1
Jump Around!

Texas:
Weather is better
Huge football fan and historically Texas does better
I was always interested in Engineering, not planing on majoring in it but just in case I do Texas is slightly better in engineering
The city of Austin was nice
Music s huge over there!
6th Street was fine as well!

U Of Michigan
Academics are slightly better
Not as big of a party school as the other two which I guess can be good
Not as live as the other two schools which can also be good at times
Somewhat more prestigious I hear

For any merit scholarships, also consider what college GPA you need to maintain to renew them.

Note that you do not have to major in biology to do pre-med, although that makes choosing courses convenient since most of the courses for the major overlap with pre-med course requirements. Consider also the convenience of pre-med extracurriculars like shadowing and volunteering at each school.

I am sure if i focus and work hard I will do fine. Besides that lets just give the benefit of the doubt for this situation, and leave that factor out. I know for Texas, there medical school is somewhat far from campus… please correct me if I am wrong. Michigan has many pre med students so I believe it’s hard to shadow doctors and such. I have no idea how it is shadowing doctors and stuff at Wisconsin. But from the pros and cons I have listed which one would be the better choice? Also, which one would you guys choose? Life would have been easier if I was accepted into UC Berkeley lol

I suspect the poster is a ■■■■■. It’s much too late to be making this kind of decision this late in the admissions cycle with those kinds of aid offers to an OOS student. It just lacks plausibility. A similar thread was started in the University of Michigan forum just a day or two ago, under a different screen name but with a similarly paltry number of posts and a similarly implausible story, but similar enough in the asserted facts (“Wisconsin is better than Michigan because despite Michigan’s superior academics, Wisconsin is a bigger party school”) that it sounds like a return of the same poster.

lol? I had a family problem man. i had to talk to the schools to even apply. I applied to these schools and another two. I was accepted by these three schools. I would just appreciate if you would help me.

I suggest you spend some time looking at the degree requirements and map out which courses you would take at each university. Choose the one that has the classes that you are most excited about taking.

Sounds like you like Wisc the most so go there. Its virtually the same price as Texas and you like it more. I’m surprised schools of this caliber gave you such nice offers so late in the game.

This poster informed those on the Michigan board that he was from “Deleware.” That should tell you all you need to know about the plausiblity of his situation.

University of Michigan is better than University of Wisconsin for every major.
10k per year for University of Michigan OOS is a steal and a no-brainer choice.

Source: I am paying 15k per year for an average public.

^ I don’t know why that matters? Texas is a pretty diverse state. You will find people from all over the world and people of all different ethnicities in Texas and at UT. Just because most students are in-state students doesn’t mean the school isn’t diverse.

“University of Michigan is better than University of Wisconsin for every major.”

That simply isn’t true. I’m as big a homer for Michigan as any poster on these boards, but even I know that Wisconsin is better than Michigan in biology and chemistry. It is equal or better than Michigan in economics, sociology, and I’m sure other disciplines as well. Academically, Wisconsin is an excellent school.
