help! Daughter needs to decide on Vocal Program

Can anyone compare vocal programs at Suny Purchase in N.Y. against Carnegie Mellons" in Pittsburg and mainly would CMU justified the 4 to 5 xs expense!

I’ve requested the mods to move your thread here [Music Major - College Confidential](Music Major - College Confidential Forums) where you will get the discipline specific advice you need to make an informed decision.
If your question was instrumental or music ed discipline related, I might be able to offer insight, but I’m really not qualified to address the vocal aspects; my knowledge of the discipline is limited. I’d be more than happy to pull some links and point you to posters knowledgeable about either or both programs.

Having said that, so much is contingent upon your d’s relationship with her private instructor. I assume she has had sample lessons and visited each program.

If you are instate, (or even OOS) SUNY Purchase is a wonderful bargain if all her other criteria are met. And if all other things are equal, CMU is not worth the 4 to 5 x price differential over Purchase at least from an instrumental undergrad pursuit.

WHile you’re busy comparing things, also see if SUNYatFredonia (known for music) trumps SUNYatPurchase, for meeting your student’s needs.

If you pick a SUNY, each SUNY campus has a different flavor or specialty. Fredonia is known for music, as well as teacher education.

SUNYPurchase is known for performing arts including music, so you might want to weigh their programs. Obviously the access to NYC (45 minutes by train) for cultural enrichment puts Purchase in a class by itself for SUNY’s! Fredonia has nothing like that.

Since you mentioned CMU I thought I’d also mention SUNYatFredonia, which is near Lake Erie in Western New York, near the PA border.

Oops. Given the time of year, I wonder now if your D is a junior or senior?

If a junior (or younger) it might be relevant to mention other SUNY’s and engage in a more general discussion.

If she’s a senior and you’re down to the wire making a concrete decision, then the thread should probably stick close to your Opening Post, comparing just the vocal programs at CMU to SUNY-Purchase, especially with respect to cost/value differnces between those two places.

Can you write back to say if she’s a jr. or senior?

Also if you scan the 2010 Master Acceptances thread here http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/1064745940-post996.html</a> there are a couple of posters at each with vp acceptances. The first page of that thread has a link to the prior year’s acceptances thread, where you can do the same. Note that the SUNY’s are listed as State U New York (location) within the list.

You can search for posts by user name beyond those I already linked for you to see if there is additional info. It may also be worth using CC’s private message feature to contact a poster if no one responds within this thread. Time is getting tight.

My D is also choosing between CMU and a couple other schools. If you want to PM me, I can give you some information.

check your PMs,Joycecatherine!
