Got accepted at University of Michigan, University of ILL, Pudue, and Rose Hulman trying ot decide for undergraduate in Engineering. Live in Ill. Kind of like the idea of a small school so like Rose Hulman. Has anyone had experience with Rose Hulman...what would you do.

how did you already get those acceptances? very nice, congrats!

sorry, if i cant be of much help tho...

Another fact that might help with feedback is that I am a female.

Cheeze, Rose-Hulman has a good reputation, as do the other places. A lot of your decision would therefore have to do with what you expect out of your college experience. If you prefer a more intimate atmosphere, Rose Hulman would be best. If you prefer a large school with bigtime sports, then the others would all be wonderful. If you like smaller schools with engineering but aren't sold on Rose Hulman, there is no shortage: Worcester Polytechnic Institute, RPI, Bucknell, Lehigh, and Clarkston come to mind. All would seem to be more than happy to have more females, as would all the others to which you've been accepted.

I've heard from a few people that the girls at Rose-Hulman get treated extremely well by the guys there. If you like a small school Rose-Hulman would be the best. However, my math teacher told us to never go to a school that is THAT small and I will give his warning to you too. If you went to UIUC or to Ann Arbor, you would have the opportunity to broaden your education. If you would oneday decide that you hate engineering and want to pursue a more humanities based major, you will not have the opportunity at Rose Hulman. If you choose them, you may be choosing a school that will not allow you to completely diversify yourself.

However, if you like it than personally, I would go to Rose-Hulman. I know that engineering is exactly what I want and so it is fine for me. If you have any hesitation though, choose one of the other three.

Cheezwhiz, you have a tough decision. I'd say Purdue is out because it is not quite as strong as UIUC or Michigan. Rose Hulman is completely different and if it fits your personality and academic needs better, it is worth considering. I'd say if you want to focus purely on Engineering and wish to have very close contact with your instructors, Rose Hulman is best. However, Michigan and UIUC have much larger offerings and their reach is both wider and deeper. If you wish to change majors from Engineering to say Economics or Business or History, you can do so at UIUC or Michigan...but not at Rose Hulman. In terms of reputation, Rose Hulman is far narrower in scope. Of course, finances are probably another subject worth looking into. Let us face it, UIUC is probably going to be significantly cheaper to attend since you are in-state.

I'd wait and see who offers you the most money and then decide. You have until May 1.

Also, go and visit and spend some time with some current students.

Thanks for the feedback. i have visited all of them except Purdue. Anyone have any additional feedback on Rose Hulman. My big concern is what I've read about the big school and getting taught by TAs. I am a "little" concerned about ehsy Karen said about making sure that engineering is what you want. I am pretty sure but who knows once you get into the program. I was also at the week long engineering camp at Michigan during the summer and also spent a day at Northwestern at their girls engineering camp. So I am fairly certain about my choice. My only concern now is big or small and which school. Thanks again for your feedback!

Wow, those are all the schools I want to apply! (junior now)
When did u send out your apps?
How come u can get decision letters that early?

One of my best friends is a freshman at Rose Hulman and she is loving it! She says her classes are great, her professors are really friendly, and the dorms pretty nice. It seems there's a deep nerdy streak, so if that's not your thing, I wouldn't recommend it. However, the social life for straight girls is amazing, since the campus is overwhelmingly masculine. She has seemed quite pleased with her choice, has found it easy to make friends, and has been challenged by the academics.

Besides, it is also ranked very highly in pretty much all areas of engineering, so if that's what you want to be, Rose does a wonderful job.

((But I'm not an engineer, so that's just my perspective...))

Thanks Leshachikha...

That whole thing about the deep nerdy streak is true, definitely, but don't be deterred by it. Anyone who studies math and science is going to be a nerd to some extent. And most of the people here at Rose actually come out of their rooms for events other than meals and classes. We're nerdy, but friendly nerds.

UIUC does not release its decisions until Dec. 15. How do you know you're accepted?
