Help Deciding Between Ohio State/Wisconsin!

Yesterday, I got a call from the Wisconsin-Madison admission office stating that I was accepted off of the waitlist. However, for the past 3-4 months I have been set on Ohio State, organized an orientation, visited twice, etc.

I know that Wisconsin-Madison is highly regarded in all areas, moreso than Ohio State. I'm looking to study business, and both seem to be equally strong in this field. Please help me compare the two schools and figure out which would be the better choice! I plan on visiting Madison in a week and a half.

Your answer is in your username

Wisconsin all the way

Not even close. Wisconsin is a national name, OSU isn't. Its academics signioficantly exceed OSUs. Wisconsin grads get top jobs all over the country, 99% of the OSU grads I know never even leave Ohio. Beyond that Wisconsin has a MUCH better social life. I could never imagine someone choosing OSU over Wisconsin unless there was a financial or other significant reason.

Are you saying Ohio State is not a national name!?!? Sista puuh-leez.... Where do you live? the boonies? And Wisconsin having a better social life? HA!!!
I believe that if you have been 'set on' attending tOSU, and that you already seem to be moreso happy about going to Ohio State then I think you have your choice made. I think it is more of a choice of personal opinion, not just because the school "is highly regarded in all areas" I also believe that you will know which school from a (corny as it sounds) gut feeling.
Referring to the business part of your dilemma, both are regarded in business, and OSU's Fisher program is a rising program that will keep on excelling.
But anywho- Make a gut feeling about it, where would you feel the most comfortable? Where can you see yourself attending for the next four years? Do you feel at home when you think about the campus?

Ohio State is a national football name... and that's about the extent of it.

Wisconsin commands respect both athletically and academically

Yeah, OSU has a moderate academic reputation for its grad programs, a poor reputation for its undergrad programs, and the campus is slum-like.

What are you talking about? Your tour guide must have told you to close your eyes for the entire tour, besides a few gas stations and alleys in New South. OSU's campus is one of the best campuses I've ever seen, and it's the second biggest in the nation.

OSU has a good reputation for business, and Columbus and Cleveland firms and corporations have field days after graduation. OSU is well-regarded in that respect -- though only in the area. Unless you plan on moving to Ohio after college (why would you, anyway? Haha), then I'd tell you Wisconson. It's more well-known around the country.

Let me mention that I was offered a medium scholarship from Ohio State ($6,600 a year), though finances are not an issue in my case. Also, my parents are really concerned with the location of Wisconsin as opposed to Ohio State (too hard to get a direct flight or drive to Wisc), but I personally feel that this is an exception because Wisconsin is such a premier institution.

Some more opinions would be greatly appreciated, if possible...

I was kind of in you situation. I got into Wisconsin as well, and wanted to do business. I wasn't too impressed with their B-School compared to the elite B-Schools. Their grad programs aren't high, only US News ranks their undergrad business high, and they aren't highly ranked in many disciples. I got 6K/year at Indiana and took it. Wisconsin gave me a $400 grant, that's it. I would have loved Wisconsin, they have the perfect environment, but I didn't feel their B-School is that good, and I didn't think they had many connections. Price was a concern, and they didn't have my main major (business is my backup). Another thing is that at Wisconsin, you're probably just going to be a regular student, whereas at OSU, you're likely getting in the honors program.

I don't know, at this moment I slightly regret not dishing out the extra money and attending UW, even though it didn't have my major, because the place is incredible, it's academics are great, and the school is one of the top 30 in the country. If there was another university to be added to CC's Top Universities, UW would be it, with it's peer assessment at 4.2. It is a premier institution, although for what you are studying, it's not that much of an upgrade. And you seem very comfortable at OSU. You would enjoy beating them in football and basketball each year.

LISTEN TO THE ADVICE.....WISCONSIN IS SIGNIFICANTLY BETTER THAN OSU

there is no comparison

I agree I only hear about OSU for football. Wisconsin is better overall.

You might want to check the football and basketball records. Over the last 10 years or so both are about .500

I understand we are not talking about sports, but I still have to argue That Ohio State far outweighs and exceeds Wisconsin in notoriety. Flame me all you want you Wisconsin lovers, but OSU just commands more attention. THye are consistently outstirding themselves every year, driving to better theirselves and create a much better image thant what has been carried on. They are constantly renovating everything, not just academic structure but even the campus itself, everything there is wired, and the old buildings are not just retrofitted, they completely gut the buildings out and you wouldn't believe some of those classrooms are some of the oldest there.
yougotjohn has a strong point there, businesses love OSU grads, especially the companies from Ohio. Fact: Columbus is the biggest test market for businesses in the nation. Many large companies arre situated in Columbus, and if not Columbus then even the state of Ohio has many large institutions within its limits.
As I stated before, Fisher is quickly rising the ranks in the business world, academics at Ohio State are no joke at all. Fisher is not a program to sneeze at, it's location is also a way better spot for business than Wisconsin is. As for executive education, OSU is 1st in the country, for an executive MBA 13th, so a little more than moderate reputation for its grad programs slipper. Even then, its undergrad is 18th, (not sure what Wisc. is) and shows no signs of slowing down.
Although it sounds like the original poster is somewhat leaning to Wisconsin. I say if it feels right at Wisconsin, then by all means go there. But this information is not to let you forget about Ohio State, its to help you reconsider, perhaps. As large as OSU is, they don't make you feel like a number, and that is certainly something that I especially respect from them, considering they have over 50,000 studetns there.

Undergrad, Wisconsin is top 15 for sure

and you're truly delusional if you think OSU holds a candle academically to Wisconsin...

"commands more attention"

???.... please tell me you're kidding.

Especially overall, but even in business, Wisconsin is held in significantly higher regard.

not only does wisconsin have a better academic program, but if you want to talk about social life, wiscosin is one of the top party schools int he country

UW BBA average starting salary is about 5% higher than OSU and the recruiters are much more geographically diverse.

bball, you are a prestige whore. You aren't allowed to give advice in this forum.

That will change with the "Thad Five" coming in.

Yeah, as soon as the NCAA violations are finally brought to light... it sounds shady.

Anyway, the fact that when OSU is mentioned you go straight to football (or basketball) says a lot about how the school is viewed.

As for Wisconsin flights... guess what! Milwaukee is just a short 15 dollar bus away. Madison has direct flights to DC (which might be close to your VA location) and is just a bus ride away from O'Hare/Midway in Chicago as well. No problems.

I was quite concerned when the first thing brought up was the sports at OSU....I don't want to be the kid who goes to school just for the athletics. It's embarrassing in a way.

Transfer, I am 20 minutes from DC...the problem is getting a flight going to Madison. They are very sporadic at Reagan National.
