I’ve been accepted to Northeastern University in Boston and UC San Diego for computer science but was wondering which of these would be the better option for me. I’m from Cali so Northeastern may be far but i visited recently and enjoy the atmosphere of Boston. Also cost isn’t an issue as both are relatively the same. Which of these would provide me a better opportunity for job placement/grad school as NU has a great coop program but UCSD has better “prestige”. Also overall atmosphere/fun is a big factor. Thanks!
Ive also been waitlisted to Johns Hopkins and was wondering if its worth the effort to get in :l
NEU student here:
NEU will probably carry more prestige than UCSD on the east coast, though comparable. NEU certainly isn’t as known on the west coast yet but is gaining footing quickly. I am a NEU student and love the department here. I can’t say I know much about UCSD CS, it would help to get some info there but I can assure you that you will have a great program for you at NEU. Any questions, feel free to ask away.
Do you want to settle on the east or west coast after graduation? The co-op program is very strong for CS, but CS is so much in demand that you could still find gigs without it. That said, the career services of NEU are hard to top. Unless you specifically wanted to head to the west coast after graduation, I would go NEU.
So would neu be better entrepreneurship and start up wise?
I would say so. NEU will give you field experience (up to 18 months) while in college, and that’s pretty valuable. NEU also has a well ranked business school and lots of business/CS combined programs if you chose to go that route.
To add to the previous comments, NU has an outstanding cybersecurity specialization and works closely with the NSA and homeland security, if that is something that interests you. Coop is a big plus.
