If you get these scores on Barrons Math II (2008 Edition), should you even try Math II or is it better to take Math I? These scores were over the last 3 weeks:

Diagnostic 640
Test 1 670
Test 2 650
Test 3 600
Test 4 570

Are the tests made to be increasingly difficult? Those of you that already took it today did a performance like this on Barrons still make the CB test seem easier? PR & CB scores are in the 710-720 range. Can you break 700 with such scores?

If you have taken Precalculus already, does it look bad to try Math I if you are applying to highly selective schools? Will not be applying to Engineering or business.

The Barrons tests are widely known for being much, much harder than the actual test. Also, the curve for Math I is really, really harsh - to get an 800 you can't miss any questions. I've heard of people taking both and doing better on Math II.

If I were you, I would just take Math II, since the curve is so much more generous.

I went into Math II cold today, only knowing that it'll test some pre-calc stuff and I didn't think it was that bad. I finished pre-calc this year and I knew how to figure out a large majority of the questions.

Aim is to get at least 700 on Math II which seems like the minimum to be decent for selective colleges. With Math I the goal would be to get around 770+ to be competitive. The score on the PR Math I test was 710, so at this point, with having taken 4 Barrons tests, there is at least a slim chance that you can get at least 700 if the real tests are not as difficult as Barrons.

If you get an ACT score of 33-34 in Math, would it still be necessary to take Math II, if the colleges you are applying to say SAT + 2 Subject Tests or ACT with Writing is enough?

Math II definitely has a more generous curve. Why? Because math geniuses like my friend go in and take both Math I and II, even when they know they can ace Math I. sigh

I would take math II. I never learned most of the non-algebra/geometry topics on the test and I think i got over a 730.
If you self study some I think II is the better choice, though a good score in math I is not going to hurt you.
