I am kind of stuck as to who I should be taking for this coming fall quarter for Chem 140A (Organic Chemistry). I am currently enrolled in Whitesell, but I have been hearing that Ternansky and Perrin are both excellent professors. Whitesell has really early lecture times, is a less than average lecturer, but is a lenient grader. Ternansky and Perrin have evening and noontime classes respectively, are great lecturers, and are generally hard graders. With that being said, any advice on who I should take?

I had Ternansky and liked him enough to take him again for 140C, which actually says a lot because 140C isn’t even required for my major. I think the general rule though is to take anybody except Whitesell.

What?! Whitesell is the harder grader since he likes to dock off unreasonable points just so his class can have SOMEWHAT of a curve.

Perrin and Ternansky probably give more A’s, however those are solemnly based on the curve.

Personally, I think Perrin was the best Ochem prof I had throughout the Ochem series.

Ternansky > Perrin >>>>>>> Whitesell

Although you won’t regret taking Perrin over Ternansky, either. At this level, both are excellent professors and know what they’re doing. Ternansky has a more engaging personality IMO (sometimes bordering on offensive if you don’t have a sense of humor), and can be easily persuaded for leniency if you’re a girl. Perrin’s one of those classic professors (in a good way).

Astrina, just curious, you sat in Perrin’s lecture before?

I sat through both, but honestly you can’t go wrong with either of them. I will say that Ternansky seemed a little more intimidating. I just like Perrin for his availability to the students. He keeps webct forums open as a window on his computer so he is constantly explaining any questions students may have no matter the time of day… usually not between the hours of 12-8am though.

I didn’t take Perrin, but Ternansky is also pretty good about answering webct questions.

Does Perrin (make his TAs) grade and post midterm scores within 3 and a half hours of his students taking them? That is probably the best thing about Ternansky. (As a student of course. As a TA it must be terrible).
