Allow me to preface this by saying I'm very uninformed about the entire college process (I'm a senior now), and if anyone knows ways to learn more about the entire process (applying, the essay, etc.) I'd love to hear it.

Anyway, the main concern right now is that I'm in AP English. I've been in normal english for the past 3 years, and while I don't think I'm bad at writing/reading, it's definitely weaker than my math and science skills. Every year my teachers thought that I could move up to the higher English level, but I never did.

I've had an unweighted GPA of 4.0 throughout all of high school and so my main question is this: Would a B (or possibly even C, but I think I have too much work ethic to let that happen) in AP English look better or worse than an assured A in normal english? Also, as a general statement, is unweighted or weighted GPA more important?

To add more details: from what I've seen in the first couple of days, this is definitely the hardest class I've ever taken (the summer reading test was crazy). I also have a pretty busy course load in addition to being in marching band, which takes up a ton of time.

B in AP English is definitely better. Colleges like to see you challenge yourself. I’m a senior too (also uninformed on most college-related things), but my counselor has continuously lectured me on how great AP classes look to colleges, especially in junior/senior year. Finish your high school career strong!
My own personal opinion-- unweighted and weighted are both SUPER CRUCIAL and I don’t know which one is “better.”

I think a B in an AP class would be better, it shows that you can challenge yourself. Also just so you know, I don’t know how it is at your school, but at my school AP English is brutal for the first few months then it gets easier…

Colleges like to see that you challenged yourself, so the AP looks better. More importantly though, if you pass the AP exam within the requirments of the college you applied to you can get undergraduate credit. My AP exam credit was able to knock out quite a few gen eds in my freshman year of college. For me, that was very important.

As far as GPA, while they may look at both weighted and unweighted, unweighted is the “real” GPA and they will be very interested in that. There are no weighted GPAs in college, so it is better to be comfortable with the unweighted GPA.
