I was accepted into NYU:Tisch in the Meisner Studio for acting. However I wanted to do music theatre. Although I do love theatre music is something I definitely want to do. I was accepted into the Musical Theatre programs for both Webster and AMDA L.A. I was accepted as a vocal performance major for Berklee College of music. I received scholarships from all of the schools with NYU being the largest (in proportion to total cost of attendance). I know that the acting training at Tisch will be phenomenal but I am finding it hard to justify committing to such a huge financial committment when I will be in a program (it’s mandatory) for two years in which i will only be doing a fraction of what I truly love to do. I would just choose Berklee but if I attend there I cannot pursue a double major (which i believe is a smart thing to do because of the uncertainty that goes along with a performance degree). I am running out of time to decide. I was able to get the enrollment deposit deferred but the housing deposit for all of these schools is due the first of June. no exceptions. I have been debating this for months and considering all the options, I am at a complete loss.

LCD 123 What do you want to double major in? Are you doing that because you truly have strong interests in other areas or only “because you think it is the smart thing to do?” That would certainly be a large deciding factor. IF it is an academic area, find out which school makes this possible, most BFA’s make this very difficult. I think with your acceptances, you could rule out AMDA…you have acceptances at educational institutions that are highly regarded both academically and artistically in NYU and Webster, and Berklee College is also at the top of the heap in the world of music. The question for you is, what does your heart tell you? What coursework do you really want to focus on? Any of these three are terrific schools with fantastic programs and they are all in urban locations. When you visited, which program most drew you in or sung to you? I know that at NYU after your first 2 years you can study in a different studio …not sure the procedure but you may be able to do the New Studio MT or ETW for those two years–you should find out about this option. IT sounds like Webster might be the best of both worlds for you. You get the MT training in music, theater and dance you desire, but I am sensing you are less thrilled with that option. What about other factors …distance from home, travel expenses, have you carefully looked at the faculty you will have the opportunity to study with at each school? You have a wonderful problem that many would love to have
My suggestion is follow your heart and your gut…don’t pick a place because you think someone else will think it is smarter to go there. Take the plunge, once you make a decision, immerse yourself in everything wonderful about that school and program Best of luck in your decision.

Hi LCD, My D was accepted into Meisner at NYU and Webster as well. Both great choices but very diff schools. She got off SU’s wait list and chose to go there. I think you really need decide what is best for you. Webster is a very small college overall where NYU is the opposite. I cannot speak on Berklee vs. AMDA. We only visited NYU and Webster. You really need to see which fits you the best. You will be able to study in the New Studio after 2 years so NYU could work but if awesome MT training is what you want Webster is really an amazing fit. I wish you the best of luck with this decision.

Is the decision date no longer May 1st?

The decision date is still May 1 at most colleges, including NYU. I find it very odd that the OP is saying that he/she got the deposit to enroll deferred. That is highly unusual and particularly unusual that all four schools agreed to that. OR…did you put down more than one deposit?

That aside…
I can’t tell you which school to pick. I can’t imagine someone who got into the level of schools that you got into then being happy attending AMDA. Berklee is great, but by the same token, you say that you don’t like the idea at Tisch that you are not in the MT studio but at Berklee they don’t even have MT! You won’t be focusing on MT, or acting or dancing. If you are interested in doing any academics (you mention minoring), there will be few at Berklee and it is not a regular college. Also be aware that the retention rate at Berklee is low.

Webster may be a great option if you prefer a BFA in MT.

I do want to say that if you choose Tisch and are in Meisner, you can still take private voice and you can still perform in musicals. You may be able to add dance as an elective. You’d get a great acting foundation. After two years, you could try to get into Playwrights which has a MT Practicum semester. If possible, you could try to get into New Studio. I will mention that there are many MT kids in the various acting studios at Tisch and they are cast in musicals and continue with taking voice. Also, at Tisch, you will get some liberal arts and if you do wish to minor, you can.

Good luck to you.
