so i'm gonna try to get into the film major once my junior year swings around.

but as far as the app goes for right now, does it matter what major i declare? are some majors more popular and so it's a better idea to declare a major that's more obscure (as long as it still fits in with your strengths/interests)?

Just apply “undeclared”. My daughter is a sophomore right now. She just applied and was accepted into the communications program. It was competitive and she had to wait until she was a sophomore. She applied undeclared and I believe that is what you need to do. Then apply for your program when the time comes.

would it also be ok to declare myself an english major then try to transfer to film? so at least i have a back-up major?

Not a bad idea. Having a back up is a good thing since Film/TV is very competitive and selective. Just be sure that you fulfill any lower divisions for Film/TV before you apply for that. During your freshman year you could take care of GE’s, and some lower div. English and Film/TV classes.

ok, thanks!

and it doesn’t hurt your chances if you declare a major like english (that may be popular at ucla), right?

If you want to play it safe and not declare a major that would be impacted than just apply “Undeclared-Humanities”. Once again, this is what my daughter did and she got in. After taking GE’s the first year and a few lower div. comm studies classes she applied for that program and was recently admitted. You don’t have to declare a major until the end of your sophomore year or start of junior year so applying Undeclared gives you some freedom to try many classes before committing. Thousands of students apply as Undeclared. Please check the UCLA website thoroughly as I really don’t want to give you inaccurate advice. I am sure under the heading of “admission” or “applying” you will find info on devlaring majors. I can only speak about my daughter’s personal experience

what major you put down for the college of letters and sciences DOES not affect admission…I know someone who works with ucb and ucla admissions and they stated that onyl majors for liek engineering, arts, etc. realyl matter…

of course, they want to make sure tha they don’t havel ike half the student body as bio majors, but most pple switch their majors at least twice sooo dnt worry too much

if u do put somethignl iek communications…then they might look to see if ur extracurriculars match or what not

ok, thanks, guys! i think i probably will declare as an english major, just to have a backup. english major isn’t THAT popular at ucla, is it? like not half of applicants are gonna put that, right? :P
