Help!! Doing bad in math! Can someone give me advice!

I have been doing very bad in math lately. Grades have been in the 80s range. I've always been decent at math. I'm a Freshman and I'm taking honors Algebra II w/trig. First Marking period i did pretty well and got a 96. Second i did pretty bad; 92. This is pretty inflated by homework and classwork. My tests were 85, 84, 86, and 92. I also got a 91 on the midterm. I was lazy 2nd marking period and i pretty much slept in class and BSed homework. When it came to midterm, I studied very hard, reviewed all the material, took a practice test, and retook all the previous tests that i did bad on. I thought it was pretty easy and that i had gotten like only 59/60 but i got 55/60. BIG DISAPPOINTMENT. Then i decided that i would do well third marking period. First Trig test, 83. Wow. I need a 93 to get an A and a 95 to qualify for a summer program. What can I do to bring my grade back up? How do you guys approach math? Any ideas how I can improve my scores? Thanks; I know I am capable of doing good from previous years and marking period 1.

Well, let me tell you that you’re not the first person to absolutely moan about how hard trig is, but you are the first to have expected straight A’s when it comes to trigonometry.

I think trigonometry is just one of those cruel parts of math you’ll have to accept a B in.

OH NO! You got a 96 and then a 92??? I jut want to tell you that you need to accept the fact that a 4 point drop is sometimes inevitable. I can understand you’re grade dropping to a C but come on…I think you are just overreacting. Trig actually is not hard, you just need to know your stuff. You’re used to knowing you’re stuff 96% all the way…looks like you only know 80% of it :/

Some people find that reading the textbook is useful.

Seriously? You got a 96% and a 92%, both grades are outstanding. The third marking period has barely begun and you’ve only taken one test so far. Relax.

Somedays I’m not sure if I’m lucky or just cynical about having a ridiculously difficult honors geom. course as a freshman, and becoming conditioned to Cs and Ds, with occasional Fs. Then I read posts like this and I just want to scream.

hobbithill: Your post made me smile. I feel the same way!

@hobbithill and @acrazylog story of my life in honors geom. and honors trig. i got a C+ first marking period, and somehow ended up with a B… i moved up to honors trig and got a B… math has ALWAYS been my weakest subject. This year math has screwed me over big time… Honors Precalc is a pain in the rear… I have a C cumulative average and i need to get it up ASAP.

back to the forum topic lol i think you should get a tutor (i got one and she helps alot), but if you need extra review, go on youtube and type in your topic and watch some math tutorials. they really do help (especially with math teachers that cannot teach) the math department in my school sucks big time

Sometimes you actually have to work in order to achieve highly…

^^ like doing lots of practice problems or looking for websites that have easier-to-understand explanations. And keep reviewing so you don’t cram it all in at the last minute.

ok thanks for the advice. and im freaking out because I need a 95.

I’m in the same boat. I’m in Algebra II (my school doesn’t have honors) and I just got a 79 on the logarithms/exponential function graphing test, bringing my overall grade to 89.7.

It sucks when it’s that close. Grades in that class are weighted too, so I have to wait two weeks for the next test…

I HAVE A SLIGHT SUSPICION THAT THIS MAY BE YOUR PROBLEM…hmm…

Yeah i know that is what i pointed out. What is my problem on the midterm and last quiz?

On your midterm, you got a 95, which is awesome. An 83 is disappointing, but you have to deal with it, sometimes you have bad tests. Did you study for the third quarter test? If you did, maybe you need a new method. I find doing study guides (or better yet, making your own and maybe switching with a friend) helps soo much. Also, maybe right before the test, just skim the chapter over again, like a mini-cram session. It helps me get 3-5 points more than I would have had I not done that.

thanks considering IB, I have decided to go review with the teacher often and may more attention in class and in homework. Also, I think studying a few days before the test helps because you know your weak points ahead of time. Thanks to everyone.

Relax, practice and don’t slack off. That’s pretty much it.

go on the youtube tutorials, if you need extra help, that’s what I do all the time. If you do that there is no reason your grade should plummet…
