Studying Japanese for 5 years, went to Japan last summer as exchange student
Member of local first aid squad

I am deeply interested in politics, finance, and the indie music scene.

Money is not a problem in regard to colleges and locations is not a problem either (preferably a warm climate.)

Any suggestions on colleges???

What do you want out of a college? Do you want to study abroad in Japan again? Do you want to take Japanese as a language?

I’ll go ahead and plug Rhodes. Your GPA helps your test grades which are a little on the low side (but still in the interquartile range for Rhodes). Since money’s not a problem you’d likely get accepted with a low aid package.

Rhodes is in the heart of Memphis, and if its anything it is a music town. Political science and business are are couple of big majors. There’s an orchestra if you’d like to continue that.

And Memphis is definitely a warm climate!

Thanks a lot for the response. But I feel like 1,700 or so students is incredibly small for a college, isn’t it? Wouldn’t that feel like high school.

But its a perfect location.

Yes I would like to take Japanese again. Study abroad is a big factor but I would like to go to other places besides Japan.

What do I want out of college… Well I want a college with a high quality of life, where its easy to make friends, go to party’s but at the same time where I am able to pursue my interests and be set for getting a job after college.

All offer abroad programs:

-Beloit (Japanese major and a very strong program)

  • Earlham (Japanese major program and top in the country -they were actually the first college to offer Japanese as a major),
  • Knox (Japanese minor only)
-Ohio Wesleyan (Japanese courses, but no major or minor)
    -Skidmore (Japanese courses)
-Whittier (Japanese minor and they offer a 12K music scholarship)
-Hampshire (Japanese major offered through the 5 college consortium -Amherst or U of Mass Amherst offer the Japanese courses)

-Oberlin is a big reach, but top for music and Japanese. ED would be your best bet for admissions if you can afford to attend.

As you can see, these are all LAC’s and yes, smaller schools. If you are hoping for a larger university, then you should focus on more schools in the west coast, though there are a couple in the east coast:
-U of Vermont
-U of Maryland (big reach)

In the west there’s lots of schools in CA (several of the Cal State’s), U of Redlands, OR (U. of Oregon), and WA (Evergreen). Both my older two kids are into indie music too and I think you’ll find a good sized nitch at the majority of these schools. Rhodes is gorgeous by the way, if they offer Japanese, do look at it. I know Oglethorpe also offers Japanese if interested in the south. Good luck!

The other CA school I meant to suggest was U of the Pacific (for Japanese), not U. of Redlands. I think I need some sleep, lol!

Lewis and Clark (Portland OR) has a study abroad program in a number of countries (including Japan) and has a Japanese minor.

Japanese is only a part of my decision but great thanks a lot. Now I have a lot to choose from tell me if you have anymore suggestions
