I’m a sophomore and have a 86% in AP comp sci. I didn’t have much previous experience, and enjoy the class. However I am pretty lucky to have an 86% thanks to curving on tests and a decision by my teacher to drop a few low scores.
My counselor says I should stick it out, as a B won’t really hurt me. I really don’t want that B though, and I could drop the regular programming class and get an A.
My comp sci teacher says I should do that if I’m really worried about my grade. I reason that maybe I should rush into AP with no experience too, and if I drop down, next year, I can do really well in AP.
Anyways, after AP, my school offers second and third year AP comp sci, “super AP” classes, where you sort of TA the class and use your skills in “real life” outside the class. I think this is cool, but I don’t think I would be ready after this year.
I’m stuck on what I should do. My counselor says to stay, but my teacher says I should consider dropping. I could help my GPA, and be more relaxed. I also have no idea how I would do on the AP test, most likely a 3 or 4 at best from what I have seen. I basically know the material, but it takes me a long time to think about it and I’m no master yet. Dropping to the lower level would give me more experience and time to prepare, since I have gotten a taste of AP.
However, since I may want to major, maybe colleges want to see my push myself, and take those “super AP” classes in both my junior and senior year, compared to dropping now and only taking it my senior year.
Thanks so much, any comment would be appreciated!
I do not have that much experience in high school so this may be wrong. Sorry if it is!
Personally, if you have almost all As, I do not think dropping out is the best solution as colleges are okay with you getting a couple of Bs in AP courses. They are aware of the struggles of AP since it is college-level. However, the choice is always up to you. Having a B in a couple or one AP courses will not affect your GPA that much. (At least in my area.) I personally do think colleges will like, “super AP,” as of the way you described them, but I have never heard of them before, so I do not think I can help you there.
Sorry if this is a bad answer.
Have a good day!
