Hello everyone,Im new here and new to the college process,my daugter just recieved her award letter to washington college today, she is in th NHS and it has on there website NHS students recieve a scholarship for about 15,000 guaranteed but it dosnt say anything about it in the award letter,it says washington college need base 20,000, so whould that be include in that or should this be seperat? It does say on the site students are notified of this award once ammitted so im a little confused to wether or not that is included with need base aid! Thanks so much for any info you can help with!

Thanks a bunch

I don’t know about Washington College, but my S has received some merit based scholarships and the award letters came after his acceptance by at least a couple weeks. I guess that makes sense since the admissions office is sending the acceptance letter and the financial aid office is sending out the scholarship info. At least that’s been our experience. Hope you get great news soon!

We recieved the award letter about a week after AL came and im confused to whether or not the NHS merit is included in the washington college need base air! This is what it said

Shouldnt it be seperate, Im hoping because it is about 45,000 a year which would mean were about 15,000 short and thats exactly what she should get for NHS ps thanks for your reply , this has got me near tears over this whole process

You can always call the financial aid office and ask. My daughter’s college is very small, and the financial aid office and the billing office are next door to each other, but apparently they never speak with each other. Her bills always have the needbased aid listed, but never the academic scholarship or the independent scholarships she gets from non-school sources. My kid has to stop in and get the bill reconciled every semester.

Washington offers A merit scholarship for i think 15,000 to accepted students in the NHS so i assumed it would be on the award letter,so with it saying washington need-base 20,000 i thought it was included in that, I just hope im wrong, thanks so much for your reply i plan on calling tomorrow but i can see it will be a restless night! How do people with 2 and 3 kids get threw this

The WC website says:

“All accepted applicants are considered for merit-based scholarships that range in amount from $5,000 to $20,000 per year. Accepted NHS and Cum Laude Society members are guaranteed a scholarship of no less than $12,500 per year. To qualify, students must be inducted into NHS before March 1 of their senior year.”

“For students who show exceptional academic promise, Washington College also offers merit-based academic tuition scholarships. These are offered without regard to financial need; however, in cases involving both superior academic achievement and demonstrated financial need, a merit-based tuition scholarship will be included in the financial aid package. Students who qualify for merit-based tuition scholarships are notified of their award at the time of admission to the College.”

It sounds as if your daughter should qualify for at least $12,500 in merit, but if so, it should have been indicated in the admission letter. The statement “in cases involving both superior academic achievement and demonstrated financial need, a merit-based tuition scholarship will be included in the financial aid package” makes it sound as if WC will “stack” need- and merit-based aid, but I don’t see a clear statement that they will do so. If they say that she is not getting the $12,500 merit because she’s gotten a need-based award that’s larger than that, I’d respond that it would still be preferable for her to get $12,500 in merit + $7,500 in need, because any outside scholarships that she lands would reduce her “need” (and therefore reduce the amount of need-based aid she receives) but wouldn’t have an effect on a merit grant.

So this is included were it says Washington college need-base aid?

If so It really woulnd matter how they put it,there is no way in makeing up for 15,000 difference.

^No, that’s not what he means…we just don’t know if they’re going to respond to you that they increased her award to $20K and are calling it “need-based” or if they just left the merit scholarship off the initial award.

This is clearly an error. ACG is a federal program that is ending this year, so she will not get any ACG award for the 11/12 academic year or beyond.
