Hi, I've been accepted into UCBerkeley, UCLA, and Swarthmore, and I would like to pursue English Lit. as my major.

Truthfully, I love discussion and the 8-1 student professor ratio that Swarthmore can provide, but my mother's been pushing me towards UCBerkeley since she believes its name is worth more. But at the same time, all three English departments look extremely promising, and I'm feeling a bit tortured right now...

Worse, I've received invitations from both Berkeley and Swarthmore to visit their respective campuses, but UCB's on Apr. 18-21 and Swarthmore Apr. 18-19.

If anyone could give me any advice, please, please post. Thanks!

I’m assuming you got invited to the Bridge’s program for Berkeley with the dates that you posted. There are actually other overnight stay/host programs that you can attend throughout April for Berkeley. The only problem is that the Bridge’s one is paid for (transportation, program fees, etc) while the other ones aren’t. If you live close enough or money isn’t an issue, then check out the other programs.

You should also check to see if Swarthmore offers visits on any other dates.

One more thing,

Despite Forbes’ List for Unsuccessful Majors and my mother, I am definitely going to pursue English as my major. I love, love writing and literature.

I looked at the UCB English department, and it looks extremely promising. But so do UCLA’s and Swarthmore’s. If possible, could you please tell me more about the English department at UCB? I would be thankful for any information.

All excellent English programs, all very different schools that I do not wish to disclose b/c I might be leaving an impression for a place you didn’t visit.

Definitely pay visit for all 3 schools. It is logical to say your college life is not only dependent on the strength of your major’s program and reputation, but also the atmosphere of the campus in general, and these 3 campuses have very different atmosphere.

Congratulations on getting into those 3 excellent schools! I myself attend UC Berkeley and love the campus and bay area (and the fact that public transportation allows you to go to San Francisco from Berkeley in like 17 mins).

However, I think I would give Swarthmore more consideration given that you would like to major in the humanities. I’m sure if you majored in English at Berkeley, you’d find a tight knit group of english majors, and it should be fun, but the dominant academic/cultural vibe at Berkeley seems to be engineering and computer sciences (Whereas at Swarthmore, I’d imagine the dominant academic/cultural vibe would lean more towards humanities, social sciences, and arts.)

Of course, I think choosing among those 3 schools, you can’t really loose.

Congrats again.
