So I just sent in my essays to the university of michigan and my essay lengths were 921 for the 500 word essay and 1048 for the ross essay? are they going to reject me because of this?

Why wouldn't you ask before you submitted them?

As long as they're very well written and interesting, you should be okay.

bump............

thats tough cuz 921 is almost double 500. i dunno

well i'm applying to university of michigan (LSA) and I have decent stats

4.0 unweighted gpa
In-state
34 ACT
good counselor rec, very very good teacher rec

will the length of the essay affect me so much that I'll be rejected soley because of the essay length? It wasnt as if I was redundant.

Mine were a little over, but I don't think it was by more than 200 words... so I'm not sure. If your stats are good and the essays are well written, I guess it won't hurt you that badly... I mean, I can't see them rejecting someone based only on the fact taht their essay was too long...

That's pretty bad, you've demonstrated that you can't follow simple instructions. What if everyone wrote twice the limit, they simply couldn't wade through all the applications.

Michigan has like 21431412411 applicants- they have better things to do than count words on essays.

well the thing is that my essays look only around 1.5 pages. I think the word count was so high cuz I use a lot of short words. I'm also an instate applicant so will that help?

They also have better things to do than read 1000 word essays. They wont notice the differnce between 500 and 600 words, but 750+ they start to get angry. They have 21431412410 more applications to read. I think they will just stop reading the essay

well the adcom at the u of m orientation said that they make it a point to read everything on the application. Honestly, it only looks like 1.5 pages which is only about a half page longer than a normal 500 word essay. The real question I'm worried about is will they reject me soley on essay length?

If it's good they are definitely not going to get angry about reading 500 extra words, which takes all of a 45 seconds. If it sucks, then it wouldn't have mattered even if it was within the word limit.

true dat.
character limit

I don't think they'd reject you solely (why does that look like it's spelled wrong?) on word length, but I do think they'll notice that it's way too long... like venkater said, they probably won't notice a 100 word difference, but twice as long... don't worry about it, though. You've already sent it, there's nothing you can do now, so just hope for the best. Seriously, while it probably wasn't the best thing to have done, I don't think the length of your essay is going to make or break you - if you get rejected, it was probably a combination of factors.

it really looks like a 1.5 page paper. a 700-800 word essay would prolly look just a little shorter. It might just be me, but is an admission officer, after reviewing the essay, say to his or herself that this applicant is terrible and be rejected just because he or she decided to exceed the 500 word limit? I dunno...i'm just stressed out

You better hope and pray that the adcoms find your essay very very interesting..

Lol, don't sweat it. If it really does look as long as a 700 word essay, then that's fine. No admissions officer is going to like, just look at the essay, and be like "whoa, okay too long. REJECT!!!!" Don't let everyone on CC stress you out... I know what it feels like, and the best thing to do is to just forget about it. You've already sent it, there's nothing you can do, so get off CC and stop reading about kids who are all like "uhh wellz i got a 6.0 GPA and i took 53 AP classes first semester my freshman year but oh noes i got an A- in one of them and I think the community college might reject me because I only got a 3600 on my SAT" ... whatever happens, happens. There's not really much you can do to change anything at this point, and by worrying, you're only stressing yourself out...

The bottom line is it's arrogant. They set perameters for a reason. What's up with just ignoring their directions? You just have so much more of worth to say than everyone else?

Who knows how it will hit them, but if I'm an adcom I'm not liking it.

Don't worry. At another school this WILL have gotten you in trouble, but for U of M I think that with your other stats and in state status you will be an admit before they even get to your essays.

If the essays are bad and long you might have to worry.

And PLEASE before you apply to more schools read the instructions on the application carefully.

how much over is still aceptable for michigan? my 500 word one right now is 635... im still working on cutting it but will it b alright if its hovering slightly over 600?
