So i am applying for college and like many student’s i’ve had a problem with deciding which ethnicity to put down. I am latino with white (middle eastern) and asian (pakistan) Backgrounds. I do not know whether to apply as a latino or as a multiracial person because i’ve done some research on some of the schools i plan on applying to, 2 or more races was always less than 10% of a schools chart demographic. Schools may say it doesn’t matter what race to choose because they don’t discriminate, i know that they HAVE to say that so it is invalid. Colleges either have an agenda or a quota to check off to diversify their campus so they don’t appear to favor a certain race over the other. Please i don’t know wether to choose latino or to choose multiracial (because i am 3 races) to help boost my college application.

There are 2 separate questions - one about ethnicity (Hispanic/Latin@ or not) and one about race. Answer one or both or none.
So which one would help me, that’s my real dilemma. I don’t know which one would work in my favor
Assuming you are a US applicant, Hispanic helps if the college considers it. Mixed-race will not detract from that

so mixed race would be the same or in equal terms as in applying as a hispanic? By the way yes i am a US Applicant with 2 immigrant parents
As someone also of middle eastern descent, I don’t believe “middle eastern” is either a race or an ethnicity.
No. Not what I said. Mixed race is helpful if one of the races is URM. Mixed race white/Asian is not URM. Being Hispanic is the beneficial part for you - your race will not negate that.

It’s an option on the Common Application - rightly or wrongly.
So if i apply as a Hispanic, White, and Asian. They will mainly look at hispanic because its a URM.
So in simpler terms from what im getting is
Hispanic = Hispanic, White, Asian
Is that correct?
oh and by Hispanic more specifically in mexico
My son is Hispanic, white and Asian.
That’s exactly what he put on his application. He received a full tuition diversity scholarship if that helps any.

Interesting! I’m attuned to this because of my background and most applications of various kinds don’t break out middle eastern as a separate ethnicity. Good for the Common App!

coalition SAT’s they say that Middle Eastern decent is “white” for some reason
I disagree with Skieurope that being white and asian doesn’t make you an URM. At some schools, there are very few Asians and at those schools it may help. At some schools there are a majority of Hispanic students and then being Hispanic will probably not help.
Not everyone is applying to Harvard (where we know it does matter) or Cal (where we know it doesn’t matter).

So for UT Austin if you scroll down you’ll see a demographic chart

What should i apply as in your opinion
The OP is applying to Harvard based on their chance post, and I qualified my statement saying that it was for colleges that consider enthnicity and race. Asians are not underrepresented at any college on OPs chance list which considers race.
