HELP Explain to me what Internship actually means

Okay so i have got quite an issue here, Im a freshman and I have obtained a great internship at Massachusetts General Hospital working with a great doctor on cutting edge work. I got this job through my own connections and history with the hospital. My current college Roger Williams had NOTHING to do with it. Though, in order for the internship to work, the MGH's HR department must recognize me as a student and being part of a "forma internship". This doctor who is also a professor at HarvardMed recommended I get credit for my work this summer. So i go to my advisor to get the details of the "formal internship" settled (she spoke to the doctor and vouched for me). HOWEVER, I asked her about the credit and she said itll cost me 873$ =O, now why would I pay this school 873$ for nothing they did. To make it more complicated I am transferring to UMass amherst in the fall and don't want the credit for RWU but for UMass, i really need help here. I NEED this to work!

What is a "formal internship"
Why do I have to pay 873$ if i got the internship all on my own?
I don't need credit for the internship to work I just need documentation stating that im a student and the hospital and I will benefit from the job, what documents???

HELP

if you want credit from the school, you basically have to do whatever they say to get the credit. Sometimes it involves just money, sometimes it involves writing a paper, etc.

Schools charge for credits. They don’t give them away for free.

If you don’t need the credit, you should be able to just give your intern program a transcript (official or unofficial) that shows you are in school, taking classes, and in good standing.

It is against the law for not paying an intern unless the internship is considered to be part of the intern’s education where the best way to prove this is to obtain credit for it. In order to get credit an intern will have to pay the school that grant the credit. There are many companies, mostly small ones, in using unpaid interns in violation of the law due to ignorance of the law. Big companies will not take that risk. You might argue that the law does not make any sense but that will be a topic for discussion at another day.
