-help- film student transfer

Hello, I am a freshman at Cuny Hunter, with a focus in film.
I really would like to transfer into another school, but i have heard that many film school do not accept many transfer students.
I had a 3.5 in high school and around 600 in all my SAT subjects. I have TONS of extra curricular activities, and lots of practical experience in film production.
I feel I am not challenged at Hunter, and I find the student body to be incredibly
apathetic and generally uninterested in school or friends. I am pretty hard working, and really social, so this school is not a good fit for me. I really appriciate any help given, as I am totally lost. THANKS!

Film School is a tough one since admission is usually based on creative essays and portfolios of creative work.

USC has the best film school in the world and the atmosphere on campus is amazing. I'd look into applying there but it is extremely competitive (acceptance rate lower than harvard's.)

NYU is a notch below and may be a better fit for you since you're from the city. I personally don't like NYU but thats because most of the people I know there are [edited out for language and put-down comment- Mod JEM].

BU, Emory, Wesleyan and Sarah Lawerence also have strong programs (although the cirriculum at Sarah Lawerence is a bit weird, it works for some people.)

Id research all these schools and find out which ones your interested in. As long as your grades are solid and you're good at what you do, you should be able to get into one or more of these schools.

Good luck man.

Thanks man.
i did neglect to mention that I am not from NYC, but just outside of boston, near lowell. And i have heard the same things about NYC that you have said.
Alright BU looks pretty good. Thanks again

Don't forget UMich when talking about top-notch film schools! I don't know about film school, but I know in general it's easier to transfer in oos than rd.

Northwestern and UCLA also have very good programs.

The only thing I have to say is that almost all film schools accept very few students, transfer or not transfer, in general. UCLA for instance accepts 30 new students a year, half of which are transfers outside of UCLA. It's a really tough business, but assuming you have a great looking porfolio (which I think you do) and write terrific essays, you'd probablly have a good shot.

Also, if you have created any film, short/feature, you should send those in as well. That way, the adcoms already get a picture of your talent, and your capacity to grow in their program.

In defense of NYU's Tisch School of the Arts Maurice Kanbar Institute of Film and Television, it is certainly a top-ranked school, and many graduates go on to not only succeed as leading industry professionals in film and television, but also receive many industry awards/nominations in their respective fields. The program is like a conservatory in that students begin their professional studies in their freshman year along with taking rigorous academic courses to round out the B.F.A. The films that the students produce/direct are of the highest quality - both in filmmaking/storytelling ability and in terms of depth - these are the kinds of films that actually make a person think about what they're viewing as opposed to just watching a movie for pure enjoyment. The students at Tisch take their work very seriously, and their films certainly depict that. I actually had the recent opportunity to work with many of these students, and they are certainly the most talented, dedicated, hard-working and sincere group of filmmakers/producers/art directors, etc. that I have ever met!
