Help Find a College - Part 2

@lexluthor5 How was the accepted students program for Grinnell?

I know you weren’t asking me, @wisteria100 but the accepted students reception in NYC this past Tuesday was delightful and encouraging.

Looking forward to the on campus program this coming weekend.

Tremendous results for your D, and congratulations.

Hope all goes well in Iowa. Weather not looking so terrific, but not unexpected this time of year.

Hi LexLuthor5 and fellow lovers of Grinnell -

I just read this thread from beginning to end. Lex, it sure was fun watching (reading) your transformation from “just too far and out of the way…Don’t really see applying there” to " Hopefully,…she gets the feeling that it will be home for much of the next 4 years" regarding Grinnell College. Well, I hope so, too! Excited for your upcoming campus visit. Enjoy.

My DS and your DD virtually paralleled each other on their college lists: Oberlin, Dickinson, Denison, Ursinus, and more, but once he visited Grinnell, that was it. He has accepted Grinnell as his next 4-year home. It’s a terrific school and we are thrilled, but as Home #1 is on the East Coast, it’ a tad bittersweet.

Please let us know how the NYC event turned out and your post-visit thoughts on Grinnell…Thanks.

Interesting parallels @LuvMomN8ur It was an interesting journey. Maybe we’ll see you at move in. There was much more flexibility than maybe we originally had thought. I think, in the end, she found a great home for the next 4 years.

@wisteria100 The admitted students program in NYC was great. She quickly went off to chat with a group of kids and we enjoyed talking with the alums and parents of admitted students. Everyone was so nice. It was great to see what people have done with their degree. I definitely could get the activist and charitable feel from many of them. What Grinnell nurtured, in that regard, has obviously stuck with them.

My daughter is excited in every way at this point and is talking to all sorts of different people in the admitted students chat. She’s fully committed in her mind, but just wants to make the visit first before making it official.

We can’t wait to get out there this week and see and hear all about the school. Fully expect to be making some purchases at the campus store so we can show off the Grinnell crimson when we get home.

Excited for all of you! My first year D will be planning new student orientation for those of you who come as she got accepted to be a CA (Community Advisor) which Grinnell currently calls SA (Student Advisor) but most schools call RA. LOL. Acronym soup. Keep us posted and enjoy the trip!

Just curious, @porcupine98 and @lexluthor5, did you meet each other at the NYC accepted students reception?

@LuvMomN8ur We did!

Very. Cool.
porcupine98: has your son decided?

Not yet. Let’s just say it’s a very deliberative process, involving more travel than is reasonable to squeeze into one short month. But we’re working on it.

An exciting process, though! What schools are the contenders?

See PM, @LuvMomN8ur

Hi all! Just chiming in here. My D is all set for Grinnell too, but we are excited there will be a meet and greet here in MN, so we can meet other parents and students from the area, who might also be attending. We are also visiting for the second Accepted Students Days, next weekend, so we get a better feel for the dorm options, classes, etc. Hoping S might possibly meet a prospective roommate, as well. Excited to here how this weekend’s visit went for @lexluthor5!

Outstanding visit so far. Don’t know how my kid feels, but I’d attend in a heartbeat.

Back at hotel. So far so good. Pretty campus and everything well taken care of. The dorm room we saw was huge and D said the one she is staying at is larger. Don’t miss Dari Barn for dessert. It’s the opposite way from downtown. The downtown was cute, but not much open Sunday. Looking forward to the long day tomorrow. Hopefully overnight goes well and we’ll be making some purchases at the campus store before we leave.

It’s Grinnell! She’s committed.

We are all sold. What an amazing place this appears to be as well as a great fit. D really liked everyone she met and we enjoyed hearing what the administration and students told us. Seems like the students have all the tools to be anything and do anything they want. The opportunities to make a difference in the world are all right in front of the kids and seems like the school is willing to step up and help the kids who want that achieve it. We all couldn’t be happier.

Thanks again for everyone who chimed in here.

What a journey! Thanks for taking us along for the ride. Congrats and all the best to your D.
Funny - I just read back your first post. Said Grinnell too far and you didn’t think your D would apply. Lol. Funny how things work out sometimes

Congratulations!!

My son leaning toward Grinnell as well. Planning to attend Accepted Student program next week. Best of luck you your D

Congrats!! Great thread. Can you or any of you with kids going to Grinnell tell me what the student body is like? Would you say it’s hippsterish/artsy or a mixture of different types, including preppy? Thx and I found your dc’s experience very exciting to follow.
