Help Find A College With Reasonable Merit Aid

Bucknell has a huge Greek scene that dominates the social activities. Not sure it would be a good fit or not. Check Muhlenberg more closely, they recently upped their merit aid top awards. Not much in terms of Greek life or a huge party scene. They do very well placing their students into Law, Medical and Graduate schools. Best of luck to you!

Another source of information are the schools’ Common Data Sets. If you scroll down to H2A it lists how many enrolled students got merit aid and average amount; here’s Macalester’s just as an example: http://www.macalester.edu/ir/institutionaldata/cds.pdf
And here’s Muhlenberg’s: http://www.muhlenberg.edu/xls/main/aboutus/ir/CommonDataSet.xlsx

Good luck!

I’ve been using the CDS, but never realized the exact number getting aid was in there. I see 50 at an average of almost $12K at Macalester. That may keep them on the list. Previously I was just looking at the total merit aid dollars awarded, this is much more helpful.

Yes Muhlenberg is very much on the list. We just did a walking tour and she liked it (great dining hall), but thinks it might be a bit too “artsy”, whatever that means to her today. Will have to go back. Good chance of merit aid/honors program there.

Bucknell is out due to huge party scene.

CDS are a pain in the neck to find and read. collegedata.com compiles the same info in more accessible fashion. For example, Muhlenberg:

@gandalf78 Although College of Charleston resembles a LAC, it is actually a state run institution . We visited the school in 2014, and although the demographics report a population of 2/3s female, we saw and met with quite a few male students. I think that this demographic is quickly changing. I’d also like to recommend Wofford College in Spartanburg SC.

I may have missed it, but I didn’t see anyone mention Brandeis here. My son’s SATs were 770 M, 780 CR, 720 W; unweighted GPA 4.0, weighted 4.4 (out of possible 4.5). Solid ECs but nothing spectacular. Brandeis gave him 17,500 per year for 4 years. A friend with slightly lower scores got $15,000 per year at Brandeis, and somewhat more at Clark, but I don’t know the details. Son also got great merit aid from Northeastern, but that doesn’t sound like a good fit for your D (it wasn’t for my son either). In case it wasn’t clear, this was solely merit; we didn’t qualify for need based either.

Have you looked at Amherst?

Brandeis seems to fit, but she’s not interested. Think she thinks it will not be as diverse as she’d like, whatever that man’s.

Amherst offers no merit aid, so it’s out.

Look at Wheaton College in Norton, MA. A small college in a small town with easy access by public transit to Boston and Providence. Pretty campus, no Greek scene, coed (it’s a former women’s college).

Not seen Wheaton before. Looks interesting, but looks like very limited merit aid.
http://www.wheaton.edu/Admissions-and-Aid/Financial-Aid/Undergraduate-Students/Scholarships-and-Aid/Merit-awards
CDS shows average award at only around $6K. That corresponds to what I see in the above link.

The link in post #89 goes to the Wheaton in Illinois, not the Wheaton in Massachusetts.

I see. CDS for Wheaton MA looks better. Will look at it it. Still very high % of females.

Big trip on 6/23 and 6/24. Tuesday- Lafayette interview (already did the junior day event they had), Muhlenberg interview and tour (walked the campus for an hour last time we were in the area). Wednesday- Dickinson interview (already did the tour), Gettysburg interview and tour. All of the stars had to align nearly perfectly to hit everything we needed at 4 different schools. Only possible time crunch is making the 11am tour at Gettysburg after 9:15am interview at Dickson. If we are going to be late for the tour, I’ll call on the way. We can still walk around for a while before the 1pm interview.

Should be an interesting trip.

Trying to get trips on the board to Clark soon and the Ohio schools at some point.

Unless your interview at Dickinson is delayed substantially, it isn’t that far of a ride from Carlisle to Gettysburg. You should be fine. FYI Gettysburg interview holds no weight in their decision process. It can’t hurt to show your interest but it doesn’t count in the final decision. Best of luck to you!

So I have a rising Junior at St Lawrence who tells me he could not be at a better place or having a better experience. He also got 30K scholarship. I could go on forever about this college but fwiw it definitely deserves a look. Just a great, great school with happy, active, smart, unpretentious, inclusive kids. My son is pre-med and working incredibly hard but loves all of his profs so far and is having a blast enjoying skiing, climbing, kayaking, etc…

I also have a son starting at Kenyon in the fall. I think oddly enough the two schools are more similar than not.

@5boys, hi! Long time no see! Hope all is well with you and yours!

All is great! Hope all is well with you too!

@5boys, it is. S just moved to Boston. Got a great job so we are happy as clams - as he is.

That’s so awesome!! Pm me the details… Did he just graduate? My really good friend just got back from Bates for her daughters graduation…

Hartwick is a small private within that distance. Their aid brought my son’s cost down to the COA of a SUNY ($20k/year). He opted for a larger school, but it might fit your daughter.
