Help find a "safety" for international theater dork!

Hey all! I'm in the process of doing my apps and I've somewhat finalized my list of colleges. However, the problem is that I haven't got any safeties. And the HUGE problem is that my parents REFUSE to send me to a college that isn't "well-known" :/ Which is absolutely ridiculous, but they're the ones paying for college, so I don't really have a say.

Here's my stats:

Objective:[ul]
[] SAT I (breakdown): 2300 (770 CR, 800 M, 730 W, 10 Essay)
[] ACT: N/A
[] SAT II: Maths IIC: 800, Lit: 740
[] Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.91 (Got a C in AP Lit in Senior Q1 tho :/ Rest are A's)
[] Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): Top 10%
[] AP (place score in parenthesis): AP Eng. Lang (5), AP Cal AB (5), Eng. Lit, Bio, Cal BC, Music Theory
[] IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
[] Senior Year Course Load: AP Eng. Lit., AP Bio, U.S. History, Spanish IV, Band, Jazz Band, Senior Project, AP Cal BC (self study), AP Music Theory (self study)
[] Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Some school-based ones: High Honor Roll w/ Distinction, U.S. Maths Exam 1st place, Best student in a few subjects
[/ul]Subjective:[ul]
[] Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): Fall Musical/Spring Play (Stage Manager, Student Director, Music Director), Piano (12 years & Trinity Exam Grade 8: Pass with Merit), Varsity XC, NHS, Church orchestra, Knowledge Masters Open, Big Brother/Big Sister, created/produced/directed/edited a new reality show for Senior Project, organized/arranged music/directed/edited video for school mock election. More music stuff.
[] Job/Work Experience: Tutor for elementary kids (1 year)
[] Volunteer/Community service: Habitat for Humanity (40 hours)
[] Summer Activities: International Thespian Festival in Nebraska
[] Essays: Been told they were very good.
[] Teacher Recommendation: One is "glowing" (his words, not mine :P) and I think the other one's pretty good too.
[] Counselor Rec: Fantastic.
[] Additional Rec: Drama teacher/director who I've worked with for 2 years. Talked about stage managing and being a leader, etc.
[] Interview: N/A
[/ul]Other[ul]
[] State (if domestic applicant):
[] Country (if international applicant): United Arab Emirates
[] School Type: Small Private. Best in region. Sends about 3~5 kids to Ivies each year.
[] Ethnicity: Asian
[] Gender: Male
[] Income Bracket: Middle Class
[li] Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None.[/ul]
[/li]

So I got a C in AP Lit this quarter, but my counselor's attaching a note to the Q1 transcript that it went from a A- to a C because of ONE assignment. Bleh.

I'm applying to these colleges for sure:
Yale SCEA (first choice)
Stanford
Brown
NYU- Tisch (second choice)
Northwestern
UMich

I can't seem to find a "well-known" safety school. Frankly, I'd be happy at any college with a liberal arts education and a theater major that's in an urban setting. Any suggestions??

ETA: I'm interested in technical theater, specifically stage managing, but as long as it's a theater major, I don't mind too much.

You’d probably get a pretty substantial scholarship here at Temple U.

[ACADEMICS : THEATER : SCT : TEMPLE UNIVERSITY](http://www.temple.edu/sct/theater/academics/ACADEMICSTHEATERSCTTEMPLEUNIVERSITY_000.htm)

Take a look at this thread:

<a href=“Tech theatre colleges - College Search & Selection - College Confidential Forums”>Tech theatre colleges - College Search & Selection - College Confidential Forums;

Good luck!

With those stats Michigan is a great safety school for you. NYU and Northwestern are your target schools. And getting into Stanford and Yale is a complete crapshoot. The only weakness is your class ranking, but it sounds like you go to a pretty good high school.

Looking into TU  Thanks for the thread happymom! Though I’m definitely trying to steer away from conservatories (although I know Tisch is a conservatory-type). That’s why I decided not to apply to SUNY Purchase.

country day, I never thought Mich would be a safety, but it looks to be a fantastic school. And my cousin loves it there. I would be extremely surprised (and ecstatic) if I got into Yale, but to be honest, I think that C might hold me back haha. So I’m trying to be realistic and find safeties. And for the class rank, all I know is that I’m in the top 10% for sure, as the school only releases deciles. But I would estimate I’m probably in the top 5%.

Thanks for the suggestions. Open to more :)

You still have a chance at Yale and Stanford. The problem with the admissions process at those schools is that it is so random. It just depends on who they need. For example if that class is low on actors, you would have a great chance on getting in. My prediction for you is that you will get into Michigan, NYU, Northwestern. You will be rejected by Stanford or Yale, wait listed by the other along with Brown. From there either Brown or the other school that wait listed you will let you in, but not the other. Sorry I know I wrote a confusing post.

Haha, no I got what you said! Hopefully, they’ll need a theater techie in the class of '13 :)

Hmmm…not urban at all, except for the hipsters on campus, and perhaps not well known enough for your parents but how about Bard.

maybe Brandeis?

You would love DePaul. Is it famous enough for your parents?

MidwestMom, I looked up DePaul and LOVED it! It has a stage management BFA, which is great, and it’s in Chicago, a city I would love to live in. Screw my parents, I think I found my perfect safety :)

It is a safety right?

Let’s be real here for a moment. Michigan is almost never a safety for an OOS applicant. Certainly a match in your case.
